Clemens implicated in Mitchell Report

The big names start coming out:

A former New York Yankee strength trainer says information he provided to the George Mitchell investigation regarding supplying Roger Clemens with steroids is included in the Mitchell report scheduled to be released later today, a source close to the trainer told ESPN The Magazine's Shaun Assael.

Brian McNamee, who worked for the Yankees and as a personal trainer for Clemens and Yankee teammates Andy Pettitte, also told investigators that on at least one occasion, Clemens was in possession of steroids from another supplier, the source said.

The source said McNamee told investigators he supplied Clemens with steroids while Clemens was witih the Yankees, and prior to Clemens joining the team.

Can't say I'm surprised.  I'd heard some rumblings that Clemens was one of the bigger names that would be in the Mitchell Report.

It makes me laugh
that Neifi Perez used roids.  How bad must he have been without them.

Is there a single name that surprises anyone?
**I'm assuming 'Manny Alexander' is supposed to be Manny Ramirez

**Pujols is maybe a slight surprise, other than that any one of us could have put this list together.

but i guess it drives home the point that if you use, there can be fatal consequences - though both died of presumably unrelated causes

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2007 11:19 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

the point
I think that it is being missed here.  The point isn't to drag people through the mud as some seem to think the point is to put all the known information in the public eye.  Being dead doesn't take away what they did on the field so why should it take away what they've done off the field.  This is like if there was a shooting between members of rival gangs and you didn't let the police consider the deceased as gang members so they had to label it random homicide because since they're dead they are absolved of all earthly sins.

Besides Caminiti himself "dragged his name" by admitting it.

He's not on the list, and if that guy's head is in the game, I'd rather have him hitting for me than anyone else in my lifetime.

But that's a big if.

ARod is up there too.  They are just in a class above The Big Hurt and Junior. If clean, you have to remember that ARod and Manny were STILL better hitters than all the juicers.

The difference in my highly uneducated opinion
Is McGwire supposedly used his whole career meaning he probably wasn't HOF caliber without them while Clemens and Bonds presumably used only to extend thier careers or change thier game late in their career. It wouldn't be too difficult to argue that both were HOF prior to 1998 or 1999.

Clemens will get in...
The media loves the guy...Makes me sick.  They have turned their backs on McGwire / Bonds / Raffy, etc...won't happen with the golden boy however.  He is a Yankee and Red Sox great, so they will talk about what a great competitor he was, blah, blah, blah. Screw Clemens.

by JB on Dec 13, 2007 11:02 AM CST   0 recs

I despise Clemens also..
but you are right, he is getting in.  Bonds will be in easily as well.  Basically any guy who would have been in prior to 1998 will be in.

by Houston27 on Dec 13, 2007 11:06 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

He should get in
He's probably one of the top 3 pitchers in baseball history. Bonds is one of the greatest hitters ever. Raffy was borderline. He had some good season and has some nice round career numbers, but he just doesn't seem to be HoF to me. McGwire had some incredible seasons but his career numbers don't match up.
"When I was a pup, we got spanked by presidents 'til the cows came home! Grover Cleveland spanked me on two non-consecutive occasions!" LBrooks

by WyoRanger on Dec 13, 2007 11:13 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

its a good way to look at it
if you are borderline and you used, you're not getting in.  however, if you are a lock anyway, steroids shouldn't take it away from you.

at least that's how i'd vote.  completely subjective anyway.

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2007 11:22 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

The List..
Will lessen some of the stigma against guys that were singled out like Bonds, McGwire, and Palmeiro. This is a good day for those guys.

Once Bonds and Clemens get in the Hall, it will "break the seal" and McGwire and Raffy won't be far behind.

by Topgun22 on Dec 13, 2007 11:21 AM CST   0 recs

Who the list benefits:
Arod, Bonds, Schilling, Mark Prior, Ken Griffey Jr., Fred McGriff(?), Frank Thomas, Kevin Mench (see - my head is naturally big), the old Braves pitchers...

Arod has to be front and center though

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2007 11:25 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Good point on the Crime Dog
His great career was diminished in most people's eyes because he wasn't putting up the numbers that Gonzalez and everyone else were in the late '90s.

This may be what he needed to be remembered.  The problem is most people have already forgotten him.

by JBImaknee on Dec 13, 2007 11:30 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

well
he's always been compared to raffy as basically the same guy with raffy being slightly better and people advocating raffy to go to the hall rather than mcgriff.  outside of the hall, this would tilt the scales maybe so that people consider him the better one.

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2007 11:34 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

and
i have to think borderline guys are not going to get  in.  Already, people were wondering whether new lines needed to be drawn in the offensive explosion era.  Confirmation of steroids is just going to solidify the argument.

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2007 11:26 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

McGwire
career .263/.394/.588  162 OPS+

career slg pct is 9th all time

career OPS is 11th all time

How do those numbers not match up?

Some professionals get better with age and experience. Lawyers, professors, engineers. Hookers? Not so much. -- DJ Cahill

I'm guessing Pettitte is one of them. Someone just threw him on there due to the fact his name was included in the Clemens story.

by chrisR on Dec 13, 2007 11:39 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

I wonder how the report itself reads
considering the timeframe, this obviously can't be a comprehensive list.  It probably cant' even come close to comprehensive considerign the hundreds of players that have played through the major leagues.  Is every team represented?  Does every team have a guy affiliated with them (either as a trainer or a friend of an athlete), that named some names?

by ab03 on Dec 13, 2007 11:38 AM CST   0 recs

Other considerations
How much weight did Mitchell put in sources like Jose Canseco?  He may be the source of all those '90s Rangers, who he implicated in his book.

Is being "named" being someone where there is conclusive evidence, or is this just a consolidation of rumors?  Obviously it will be a spectrum

by JBImaknee on Dec 13, 2007 11:45 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

That list
Maybe it's true, but to me, anyone could have put that list together. All it basically lists are people that have tested positive, people that have been linked to Grimsley or the Fla steroid bust or other reports, or people that admitted to them. Someone with a couple days to kill could do that. Although, maybe that's all the Mitchell Report is - a convenient collection of news reports.
