M's close to signing Silva?

So, remember Carlos Silva?  The guy mentioned the past few months (along with Kyle Lohse) as the most likely free agent pitcher to get an absurd contract?

Ken Rosenthal says he's close to a deal with the Mariners:

Carlos Silva, perhaps the top starting pitcher remaining on the free-agent market, does not figure to be available much longer.

The Mariners are in serious negotiations with Silva on a contract that would be worth at least $44 million over four years, according to major-league sources.

You can see Silva's stats here.  Groundball finesse pitcher who seems to be the new Bob Tewksbury.

Dave Cameron thinks the M's should stay away.

And Jeff Sullivan appears to be unhappy.

This is the kind of signing
that I like to see rival AL West clubs making.

That is what the

huh
That is a lot of money for a pitcher who isn't very good. I'm thinking that finishing second in the division next season should not be out of reach.
But that river of tears has dried for all of us.

Wow
188 ip one year, with 9 bb's?

That's ridiculous. Tewskburyesque indeed.

I didn't realize his control was that precise. In a ballpark like Safeco that retards power the way it does, he seems like he'd be a good fit.

And 10mm+ is abut what a #3 costs these days.

I can see that not being a horrible deal for Seattle.

I agree
10MM a year is not that bad for a #3 starter in this market now, and Silva is a solid, healthy, reliable guy.  This signing definitely doesn't make it any easier for us to get second in the division next year.

I def don't think he's a guy we should be after, but Carlos Silva does not make the M's worse.

I'm with you
He's been over league average 3 of the 4 years he's been a starter.  There have been much worse contracts given out lately.  He's pretty much getting the exact same contract as Vicente Padilla.

Go Mariners!
From the perspective of the Rangers fan, these are rather encouraging.

Some Career Splits:

  1.  Lefties hit him rather easily (.311/.350/.493)
  2.  His career road ERA is 4.93.
  3.  Since becoming a starter batters have hit .304 against him.
  4.  After his 75th pitch he becomes extremely hittable, (.343/.365/.528)
But what is the best split of all?  I think for Ranger fans it has to be his 8.84 ERA in Arlington.

Not only that
he is much more effective against right-handed hitters... and he would be pitching in a park that neutralizes righties already. He sucks against lefties, and Safeco is a lefty's dream. So he would be pitching half his games in a park that helps where he doesn't need help and accentuates his negatives.

As a Rangers fan, I like the idea of Seattle making that signing. :D
