Carlos Quentin, Elijah Dukes traded

The Arizona Diamondbacks have traded Carlos Quentin to the ChiSox, in exchange for 20 year old first baseman Chris Carter.

Before folks start freaking out that the ChiSox stole Quentin for a guy in A-ball, be aware, Carter is a real nice prospect...he posted over a 900 OPS with a good walk rate in the Sally League as a 20 year old, and that's a real tough place for hitters to put up big numbers.  To trump that offer, the Rangers would probably have had to offer Chris Davis, a year older and with a similar profile...Johnny Whittleman is also similar to Carter, but isn't as good a prospect.

And Quentin is 25 and hasn't hit in the majors yet, although one would suspect he'll be a better hitter in than he's shown thusfar with the D-Backs, given his minor league numbers.  I think this is a deal that works for both teams, as the D-Backs get a high-upside young power prospect for a quality young major leaguer who they really didn't have a place for anymore...

Also, the D-Rays have sent Elijah Dukes to the Nationals for 20 year old lefty Glenn Gibson.  Gibson is a nice prospect, #8 in the Nats' system, and Dukes is...well, Elijah Dukes is Elijah Dukes.  Extremely talent, and with lots of baggage.

Rays
I think they are finally realizing that they need pitching in order to compete in the AL East. Good moves by the Rays so far.

Umm
Are you familiar with what TB has been compiling for the last few years? Or maybe you're including that bounty in your comment. But McGee, Davis, Price, etc., they probably had the best pitching prospects in baseball before this offseason.

Nats
I don't understand what they're trying to accomplish by acquiring Pena, Milledge, and Dukes in the past 3+ months. Lots of upside potential, but looks like a combustible threesome.

by Randy Richardson on Dec 3, 2007 5:17 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

haha
Maybe they can bring Jose Guillen back and trade for Milton Bradley.

Once the Nats are out of it by June, they could turn the outfield into a thunderdome to keep bringing in the crowds.  Time for some last minute modifications to the new stadium...

Dukes, Dmitri and Milledge
Boom, b!tch (not you).

PTBNL for Dukes a couple of hours ago.  Either he had it wrong or they made a very fast decision.

Nats
now have Kearns, Pena, Dukes, Miledge all in the OF and Dimitri Young and Nick Johnson at 1B. Does this mean Kearns might be avaliable?

by FirebatM3 on Dec 3, 2007 6:00 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kearns interest me
as does Nick Johnson.

Assuming you'd get the brittle-guy discount on Johnson, he might be worth taking a shot at.

The guy can freaking hit when he's healthy and he might not cost too much right now.

Dwyade once challenged God to a game of 1-on-1, only to realize that not even God can play 1-on-1 against Himself.

Kearns
Wouldn't acquiring Nady be a much cheaper option?

Kearns: 5mil(08), 8mil(09), 10mil club option for 2010 with a 1mil buyout.

I think johnson would be good here, if healthy of course. I'm not sure of his contract status but I would think he'd be a good stop gap and could be flipped if/when a better option becomes available. Not sure what it'd take to get him considering the Nats crazy asking price for some of their players but whatever the Rangers gave up could probably be replaced when they traded him.

Gibson
I like him quite a bit. He has a nice pitch mix and seems to have a knack. But boy, they didn't maximize their value for Young and Dukes to me. I'm not saying that they are worth more right now or that they didn't need to trade them at some point. But if they had picked their spot better, they could have gotten much more, imo.

Gibson/ Matt Harrison
Similar

by jparks77 on Dec 3, 2007 6:14 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe
but Harrison is the much more advanced prospect and is not that much older.

by FirebatM3 on Dec 3, 2007 6:23 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Harrison
is 2 full years older but I wasn't trying to argue their present value. Harrison is a tall, somewhat soft tossing lefty that has excellent control and a feel for pitching.  Gibson is a tall, soft tossing lefty that has excellent control and a feel for pitching.

Yeah and
fwiw, Gibson was handled carefully by the Nats last summer. He could easily move fast after a deliberate beginning.

by Brett Perryman on Dec 3, 2007 6:30 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, though
Harrison throws harder (based on his AFL and the last I've heard of Gibson's velo), and I think that Gibson's secondary stuff is a little better.

by Brett Perryman on Dec 3, 2007 6:29 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Gibson
I read that Gibson throws 88 mph but that his velocity should increase as he matures physically.

point taken.
that's a shame though. looking at a guy with talent like that you have to hope that he can fix his crap.

agree 100%
not a coach i dislike more than him.  guy deserves nothing and gets cocky whenever any of his teams show a modicum of success (achieved largely despite himself)
