More notes from Evan Grant

Evan Grant has some more stuff from the winter meetings, offering his thoughts on the Rangers' decision to stay away from most big deals and on their pursuit of Fukudome, among other things...

Huh???
What has Boston been smokin' if they want a package with Hurley for Crisp?

well apparently all it takes
to get the best pitcher in baseball is a middle of the rotation prospect and some players who profile as average major leaguers.

i guess their trade instincts have been altered.

Whatever they were smoking...
they've been doing it since last week.. When that news broke.

how in touch are these guys really?
if they say the rangers wont do anything big (like jason bay), should i just accept it already?

Doing something big
What can they do that qualifies as big, that they can afford?  Will other teams be as kind to the Rangers as there as being to the Red Sox and settle for less than their very best prospects in a trade?

well, i mentioned bay
i think that would qualify.  the rumors for his price havnt been too high so far.

kelly shoppach and cliff lee from the indians for bay was one rumor.  and that they were talking to the rangers about relievers.

depending on how much the pirates buy into cliff lee, thats not THAT much value from a superstar player that had one bad year.  if his injuries that caused his bad year are deemed to be resolved anyway.

It really pisses me off
when teams like Boston and the Yanks get these favorable trades but every other team want to butt rape us.

by Coolbean04 on Dec 4, 2007 10:44 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

well part of the problem
is that Boston and NY have some of the best pitching prospects in baseball, and they have been able to draft those guys from the back end of the draft. Hughes, Joba, Lester, Bucholz are all guys that were passed up by nearly everybody else, and now they are premier SP prospects - the most valuable commodity in the game.

Have you already forgotten
the Teixiera, Lofton, and Gagne trades?  The Rangers got good value for Lofton, may have 'raped' Boston in the Gagne trade, and got a package for Teixeira that may set the bar for Ranger trades for years.

I'm not talking about trading talent
for prospects.

I'm talking about trading prospects for talent.

Every time we want someone (not a prospect), they ask for the moon and then they trade them off for peanuts compared to what they want from us.

To play devil's advocate
Lester is not peanuts.  But that deal, as rumored right now, is not enough for Santana.  The real problem here is twofold:
  • the pendulum has swung all the way back and teams now may be overvaluing prospects as opposed to a couple years ago when prospects could be had and veterans were overvalued.
  • Most of the Rangers' prospects are at least two years away from contributing, whereas Lester, Hughes, et al are ready right now.
Teams have surely been asking for Hurley and Wilson, but the Rangers are wisely hanging onto them. (I hope)

certainly seems that way sometimes
but i guess weve got to consider that we are just getting rumors.  the actual offers and demands could have been significantly diference.

by DSheppard on Dec 4, 2007 10:59 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

and, to ramble on some more,
sometimes the team in question just might either have needs that don't match up well with the Rangers, or they might just plain like other prospects better.  If Omar Minaya really really wants Ryan Church, or somesuch player, that does not prove the entire world is out to get TX.

Agreed
Maybe its just perception, but I share your perception.  It certainly looks like we always have to trade our very best prospect to acquire anything of value, and even then it's not enough.  Meanwhile the Yankees and Red Sox get to acquire the best player in the game and still hang on to their very best prospects.
