Twins want Weaver from Angels for Santana

The Angels are apparently dipping their toes in the Johan Santana pool...

The Twins have told the Angels that Jared Weaver would have to be part of a deal for Santana to give Minnesota another young starter as part of the mix. Other names expected to be talked about include shortstop prospect Brandon Wood.

Wouldn't Weaver be a non-starter for the Angels?

Not necessarily.

Weaver was pretty good, but not great, last season. Weaver seems to be viewed as a guy who tops out as a #2 or #3 starter, rather than a legit #1, like Santana. And Weaver's health issues and mechanics send up red flags about his long-term prognosis.

Does that mean trading, say, Weaver + Ervin Santana + Brandon Wood for Johan Santana is really a good deal for the Angels? Not necessarily...I'm not sure if it would be or not.

But I can understand why the Angels wouldn't just slam the phone down, if the Twins insisted Weaver had to be included.

The Red Sox are said to have two offers on the table, one involving center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, and the other involving pitcher Clay Buchholz. The Twins are said to prefer a package that would net them two pitchers, though they still value Ellsbury highly and walks away with Santana.

I can no longer trace the twisted root this story has in me, but I will be furious if Boston keeps Buchholz and Ellsbury and walks away with Santana.

Anyway, he's not going to Anaheim...

Put it this way...

Boston will have to give up Ellsbury and/or Buckholtz because they can and both teams know it and because that's the price to do business with the best pitcher in baseball over the past several years.

Here's another reason why I'd be shocked not to see Buckholtz in the deal. When the Marlins gave up Sanchez and Ramirez they lost potentially a good pitcher and a superstar. Would they take that back? No, they have a world championship because of Beckett and Lowell. They're probably thinking the same thing with Santana. You know you're giving up some all-stars in Buckholtz/Ellsbury but you're getting Santana who could push the team over the edge come playoff time.

Buster Onley

reports the Rangers are in on Mark Prior. Thats great, IMO. Ifyou can get him without giving up major pieces then go get him. He is young. Maybe he can pull it together and not get injured. Ass of right now I view him as a gagne type. Someone that needs a new change of scenary and Texas could be that spot.

It just dawned on me that if the Red Sox pull this thing off, there opening day rotation would be Santana, Beckett, Matsuzaka, Schilling, and Bucholtz. Wow. That's got to be the best 1-5...ever?

Tigers and Marlins...

sounds like this thing's done. Dontrelle and Cabrera to the Tigers for Andrew Miller, Cameron Maybin, and 4 other prospects. I'd like to see the additional prospects, but that's good for both teams.
