Bye bye, Freddy Guzman

T.R. Sullivan says the Rangers have traded Freddy Guzman for a PTBNL.

Given that the trade has happened on the eve of the Rule 5 draft, I have to wonder if the Rangers have targeted someone they want to grab there...

any names
of people you think they may target?

Or...
D'Antona.

play
against lefties

great
except he's a lot worse against lefties

oh
I didn't take the time to look at his splits. I just assumed. My bad.

never mind
looked up the wrong guy's stats

by ab03 on Dec 5, 2007 5:57 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

beware park factors
when looking at D'Antona's stats.

BP has Tucson with park factor of 1070 over the last 3 years.  Viewed though that lens, his stats look pretty fringy for a 1B.

i think it will be him
swap one OF prospect for another.  although, to be fair, i don't see how he would stick either

by ab03 on Dec 5, 2007 5:48 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

That's my question
The PTBNL could be any one of probably thousands now.

Hey Freddie: you've been traded.  Where?  One of the other 29 teams.  For who?  We don't know yet.  Could be anyone.

Lubanski ...
kinda slumped, but tons of potential

by BHill on Dec 5, 2007 5:21 PM CST   0 recs

I wonder
if they did it to move up in the draft.

by BHill on Dec 5, 2007 5:23 PM CST   0 recs

I've
seen Jeff Allison's name thrown around. Did he come back to pitch last year? Or is he still out with "personal" issues?

by BHill on Dec 5, 2007 5:28 PM CST   0 recs

*in addition,
his name was not connected to the Rangers. Just mentioned.

by BHill on Dec 5, 2007 5:29 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

I think I might prefer
Allison too. Of course this organization recently showed how much it enjoys carrying a pitcher who isn't yet ready. On the other hand, it does appear that they are more realistic about their chances this year than 2006.

by zywica on Dec 5, 2007 5:57 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

He has the
potential to be an impact player, but he has lots of baggage.

the way i understand it
there was no need for the rangers to open up a roster spot on the 40 for the Rule V right?  And, I would think the Rangers pick higher than the Tigers in the Rule V.  So, does this really have Rule V implications?

by ab03 on Dec 5, 2007 6:08 PM CST   0 recs

possible relationship
is there anyone that Detroit left off their 40 that they may be sending us?  The only hang-up is whether they get drafted or not?

by JBImaknee on Dec 5, 2007 6:14 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

I thought
the 40 was full; a team can't participate in the rule V if they don't have an open roster spot.

by BHill on Dec 5, 2007 6:17 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

i could be wrong
but don't the rosters have to be submitted by Nov. 20th.  If a roster spot isn't open by then, the rangers can't participate right?

This is something I just assumed but writing it out, doesn't seem to make sense.

by ab03 on Dec 5, 2007 6:20 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

I think players
must be added by then; so that they are protected.

by BHill on Dec 5, 2007 6:25 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Chris Shelton
that is who Evan Grant hopes it is.

by brettgardner on Dec 5, 2007 6:48 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

I would guess
it is Shelton if we don't take anyone in the Rule V.

I don't understand.
The article says he was traded to the Tigers.  Wouldn't that be a trade down in the Rule V draft?  Maybe there are two guys they want to draft.

maybe
it is because we are getting Chris Shelton.

That's a very good deal....
if it's for Shelton....

either way, not that much of a loss in Guzman, IMO, so this could potentially be a great trade or a 'meh' trade.

Shelton
He was DFA'd last week, so it wouldn't surprise me if he's he PTBNL. I'd be very pleased with that.

why
was he DFA'd? He's not a bad player by any means.

Shelton was DFA'ed....
because Detroit wanted to improve their bullpen with Cruceta, and they needed space on the 40 for him.

This was before the Miguel Cabrera trade, of course.

I would think that is it...
just not sure what else Detroit could have got for the guy anyway.

why would it be a PTBNL though, why
not just say shelton outright?

well, i hope its shelton anyway.  completes our 1b platoon with someone who should legitimately mash lefties.

by DSheppard on Dec 5, 2007 7:25 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

maybe
to allow the Rangers to participate in the draft. Just in case someone they like falls.

by BHill on Dec 5, 2007 7:27 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

that's my guess
they wanted to free a spot for the rule 5 in case a guy fell to them they wanted, if not they get the ptbnl that needs to be on the 40
Can you please Look into getting a less funny signature? That's sarcasm, btw. - Sharky

by rentz on Dec 5, 2007 7:29 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Yep
Shelton was on Detroit's 40-man, so if he is the player coming back, he'll have to be put on the Rangers' 40-man.

So by making him the PTBNL (if that's the case) the Rangers can make a Rule 5 pick tomorrow, then cut someone else to make room for Shelton.

Interesting
The Rangers were interested in center fielder Nate McLouth. I like how JD is thinking about his OF, but anybody know much about him defensively in CF?

by Longhorn on Dec 5, 2007 6:46 PM CST   0 recs

It's Shelton
Per TRs Blog. Certainly a solid swap regardless if Shelton pays off or not.

hot damn
I like it...
Brett Gardner broke my heart...

by Brian Thomas on Dec 5, 2007 8:10 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

since the PTBNL
has already been named, I guess we are not eligible to participate in Rule 5 draft?
