PTBNL in Guzman deal is Chris Shelton

T.R. Sullivan says that the PTBNL in the Freddy Guzman trade is Chris Shelton.

Very solid pickup there.  I've liked Shelton for a while, and he clearly had worn out his welcome in Detroit.

I expect Shelton to be the Opening Day first baseman.

I guess with the current roster cat is LF then
but if we can get a OF, shelton would be a great platoon partner at 1b for cat.  or lamb if we wanted  to, but i imagine they wouldnt bother with lamb after getting shelton.

he has better numbers against righties.

Shelton was DFA'd last week
I suppose they were worried that somebody else would grab him off waivers?

pretty good
pick up here.

Traded a guy who wasn't going to make a huge impact in the outfield mix next year for a guy who will most likely start at first next season.

This
is a great trade. What was Freddy Guzman to us? Nothing. Chris Shelton is an adequate 1B.

It seems like just yesterday that Chris Shelton went 8-16 against us two years ago in the second series of the season. I became a fan of him after that. Good trade for both sides. Good job JD!

Half of the Tigers' and Shelton's hr's that year came off of RA Dickey so you have to keep that in mind. The Dickey effect is much more weighted then park effects atleast.

Nice move by JD
Great pickup.

I think I pointed out that Shelton would be a great pickup in another thread when he was DFA'ed.

Glad to see JD was on the ball for this one.

Shelton will be in his year 28 season and have 4 years until his FA.

Jamey Newberg
...is reporting that because Texas is trading for Shelton before he cleared waivers, he immediately goes onto the 40-man roster, filling the roster and prohibiting the Rangers from participating in tomorrow morning's Rule V draft - barring, of course, another roster move in the next few hours.

That doesn't seem to jive with what I'm coming up with, or with what Adam is saying either, though. Any thoughts?

by jamcadbury on Dec 5, 2007 9:10 PM CST up reply actions

I'm sure that's true
considering how specific his report is. As Req says above, I don't think that they exactly are stacked at the back end of their roster. The only thing is that they're a little low to feel too sure about any particular guy that they might be interested in falling. While people have a pretty good idea of what could happen, trades could change things.

by Brett Perryman on Dec 5, 2007 9:19 PM CST up reply actions

That'd
be my guess.  I don't see anyone else on the 40 who's really worth getting rid of at this point.  But who knows--maybe another Rule V trade tommorrow?

by brettgardner on Dec 5, 2007 8:38 PM CST up reply actions

Just speculating, but
I assume that it's still not official and that to whatever degree they were looking at making a pick, they probably still are.

he's asking if barton is worth taking and keeping on the 25man all year

He may fall
I kind of figured he would go #1 to Tampa Bay since they just traded Young and Dukes, but according to Baseball America the Rays are not interested in him at all. There is apparently some concern over his knee, which is causing teams to lose interest in him. If he falls to us, I would love to take him. He may not be quite ready for the big leagues, but neither is Nelson Cruz and he will probably start every day for us.

JD is trying his best, and i love it...

The Rangers have investigated a number of center-field scenarios and there was some discussion about the possibility of making a deal with the Mariners for outfielder Adam Jones.

and Ron Washington is back baby...well, this is the firt i've heard from him this offseason...

"If Milton Bradley is available to the Texas Rangers, then Ron Washington would certainly want him," Washington said

i would love to get adam jones
and think he would be worth paying fair (high) value for.

although the way it was mentioned doesnt sound like its actually a possibility.

im not surprised RW likes milton since he was on the a's with him.

if bradley wasnt hurt i wouldnt be as opposed as most people would be, but i dont want to bet on a recovering injury prone guy with his issues.  i wont be surprised if RW's influence and the lack of success getting other OFs made it happen though.

we could get a good look at our in-house candidates during that time: Gorneault, Byrd, Murphy, Cruz,
Catalanotto could play out there, and maybe Boggs.
