I do like the idea...
that even if Bradley is out to start the year Nellie will have a month or so until Bradley is healthy to show he is a option. If he doesn't perform, then it will be time to move on from Cruz.

Interesting point
At what point (I assume it will be this year) do we decide Cruz and Tejeda are both lost causes?

Bradley
so who gets the boot from the 40 after this move

Bill White, Gorneault, Tejeda

"Milton Bradley was one of the better..
pure hitters available" according to ESPN. They say great low risk high upside move. Keep it coming J.D. theres plenty more to do.

I don't hate anybody...

I'm happy when progress is being made. Up to this signing no progress was made. Chris Shelton is an avg. first baseman nothing special. Milton Bradley is a stud. It just seemed like free agent after free agent was passing us by. Don't get me wrong theres a lot of work to do yet but this was a great move and I applaud pee wee on it.

Fukudome
I am all for getting him, but where does that leave Cat?  At 1B?  As a utility guy?  I am not sure.

i would think 1b
and that it would push shelton to platoon 1b.  im aware he doesnt have great platoon stats but that would seem to be the only role left.

by DShep on Dec 9, 2007 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

yeah
or put him as the utility guy. he'd be an upgrade ovez vazquez.
would he be trade bait or is his value almost nothing?

Really?
Milton Bradley?  5 million for Milton Bradley?  He is cancer.  Look what he did to the Padres last year.  Look what he did to the Dodgers.  Look what he did to the Indians.
Red Sux Nation is an evil organization.

Bradley
Yeah, hitting .313 with 11 HR and a .414 OBP with the Padres last year was really what kept San Diego from going to the playoffs.

The Dodgers won the NL West in Bradley's one full season there. He was the best hitter on the 2003 Indians, and the 2002 team stunk because they couldn't pitch, and had only three good hitters in the lineup.

is a brotha though so he might behave better. regardless i don't really care. 1 year 5 million is nothing, low risk. this is a good move.

So, did the Pads offer him arb?
Cause he was a type A free agent. I love this signing, but it'd dampen my enthusiasm quite a bit if we lost a second rounder to sign him.

Either way that means he'll likely be a type A again next year, so if he has a good season and ends up leaving, we'll at least get two draft picks out of this, which would be nice.

Whew!
They didn't offer him arby. (Last paragraph.)

I'm very excited about this deal.

If he's healthy the guy can rake.

If he rakes we either have a leg up in signing him to a long term deal after the season, or we get two picks out of him.

I'm pumped.

Agree....
best case he's the DH for the first 4 months of the season and worst case he's not even on the field until July.

The best case scenerio takes ABs away from LSB fav Botts.  What about this is a good move?

by bdavison94 on Dec 9, 2007 3:50 PM CST up reply actions

Botts
can play LF.

Until Bradley's healthy enough to DH you can go with Botts at DH, Shelton at 1b, Cat/Byrd in LF, Murphy in CF, and Cruz in RF.

Once Bradley is back, you can put him at DH, Botts in LF, Cat/Shelton at 1b, Murphy/Byrd in CF and Cruz in RF.

That would be fine by me.

Of course I have a hard time believing we're really gonna go with all those young guys full time. We'll likely find a Jerry Hairston-like spare to snake a bunch of AB's from the kids.

by thedirkatron on Dec 9, 2007 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

Only problem is......
Botts can't play LF....he may be able to DH? (Doubtful) But, maybe he and/or Cruz will have proven useful or not by the time Bradley is ready.

Btw, I'm guessing whatever time Bradley misses would severely limit his chances of reaching the "incentives" in his contract?

i'm uninformed
what's Botts' strengths?
what makes him good? his MLB numbers aren't too great.
i just wanna know, cuz i don't.

by Sobetan610 on Dec 9, 2007 4:00 PM CST up reply actions

strengths?
well, if you look at his minor league numbers, he projects to be a power hitter who strikes out a lot and walks a lot.  but, that obviously hasn't happened.  other than that, can't play 1B, and is otherwise pretty useless in the field.

by ab03 on Dec 9, 2007 4:16 PM CST up reply actions

Personally....
I don't think Botts is going to be a very good player.  That said, we have one season (this one) to find out as much as we can before we have to decide what to do with him because he is out of options.

Botts is pretty good at going deep into counts and has solid power.  That's pretty much it.  He's a horrible defender in the outfield and can't play first.  So he's pretty much a DH unless he can hit like Man-ram.

i hope
he turns out to be a beast.
of course you never know in baseball.

Botts
In the minors, he was pretty good at both getting on base and hitting for power. Those are two fairly important things offensively.

I don't think he's going to be Travis Hafner, but I could certainly see him becoming Lee Stevens, who was a pretty good player for a few seasons.

I don't understand....
Are you disagreeing with what I said?

by bdavison94 on Dec 9, 2007 4:32 PM CST up reply actions

Botts
Not really, other than that you don't think he'll be a very good player, and I think he'll be a little above-average.

I do agree that he's very limited defensively, and that 2008 is his make-or-break year.

The Rangers
need a guy that brings passion and intensity to the field along with his beastly attitude.

The last time the Rangers had a offensive guy like that was Eric Young.

Brittney Spears is aparently pregnant again, and Tony Romo and her hooked up a few weeks ago...Put 2 and 2 together.

Big problem with that
They don't allow players on the DL to be on the field.

Don't worry about that
It's a great move because he's got intensity.

It probably took CJ longer to heal due to the fact that he is a hemmorhaging vagina.

Sorry you didn't get the joke.
I guess the smiley face didn't come across well. Most people on these boards who know me would understand that my comments were tongue-in-cheek. I forget that I don't get to these boards nearly as much anymore, so there's a lot of folks I'm not familiar with.

CJ - please take this misunderstanding in the same fashion you wished others to take the misunderstanding of the watermelon photo/B McCarthy MySpace issue.

No harm...no foul.

Thanks.

I
had left knee reconstruction sugury in Hs.  tore my ACL and damagaed a bunch of cartlidge.  I hyper-extended strecthing to the 1B bag like Chipper Jones did in the minors.  Took a long time and was a pain in the butt.  I was back at 100% in about 9-10 months.
