4/26/07 game day thread

11 a.m. start today.

Yahoo Weather says that it is in the 60s in Cleveland, so I'm thinking we'll have a game today...

It will be Kam Loe v. Paul Byrd, as the Rangers try to avoid being swept...

Go Rangers...

Update [2007-4-26 11:35:38 by Adam J. Morris]: -- Lineup up. All the starters, except Wilk is in right instead of Cruz.

Weather
I am in Cleveland, and it doesn't look good.  It's very dark and starting to rain.

What is with the Rangers?
What in the world is wrong with this team?  They look bad last night, they look bad today. My god it is early, but we are now three weeks into the season and nothing.

Yesterday's game.
What makes it so frustrating to me is that the pieces to a good team are evident, but just haven't come together.

However, how would you feel if you were a Yankees fan and had an amazing start to the season on offense and had a record no better than the Rangers.  I would feel less certain about the Ranger's chances, because that could be seen as an indication that the pitching is much worse than expected.  Cat and MY are going to hit .300.  Tex is going to hit 35 HR.  I seriously doubt Wang is going to be anywhere near as effective as last season.  Kei is probably not worth the $25M spent on him.  Pavano, unreliable health.  Mussina, aging.  Hughes could be a savior, or he could get trashed.

It's not unreasonable to think the Yankees may finish third.

People rarely live up to their baby pictures.

Me too...
Brian Hayes did some interesting research.  If you look at the players listed as most comparable to Catt on baseball-reference, nearly every single one of them started a serious decline at Catt's current age.

When Newberg board is back up, I can look it up.  It was fairly compelling, and very worrisome.

Our D.....
has cost us at least 2-3 games this year.  8 guys need to get it together in the field and at the plate.  If they can do that this team could be solid.  I'm not holding my breath.

Cruz
Not surprised he's on the bench today, after how he played yesterday. That was Reimeresque outfield play.

Sad,
but I think Sammy Sosa is probably one of our top 3 best defensive OFs on the current team.

I don't know
about Hairston.  Don't know if it's much more than a coin flip between the two.  I guess since you can, in an emergency, put Hairston in CF, you might have a point.

I'm not saying he did
I'm saying that he wants the club to be aggressive on the basepaths, and his third base coach is going to act accordingly.

Now, that's not to say that Washington wanted Lofton sent in that situation, or that Wakamatsu didn't screw up by sending him.

However, that's why Wakamatsu is going to be more aggressive is sending runners than we've been in previous years.

doesn't make sense to me
I don't see the need to take the bat out of your best hitters hands and try to play for 1 run when you are down by 3.

Especially when facing a very good offensive team with our #5 starter on the mound.

Maybe you could explain why you think that is a good move?

well, you're not supposed to give up a run every inning.  I like how everybody puts the blame on the offense when our starting pitching has consistently been giving up 5 runs a game.

everyone needs to get
used to the moneyball approach if you want to watch the Rangers w/out pulling your hair out.  That is the reason why the A's weren't interested in him being their coach.

It resulted in a run w/ one on and one out and we got nothing out of bases loaded and no outs.

The only way to fix Ranger's pitching is to move to the NL, it's not like we have a DH anyways.

by cgolden on Apr 26, 2007 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

kinsler bunting??
Makes sense to me, rely on Wilkerson (who doesn't like to make contact) and Laird (who also apparently doesn't like to hit the ball) to get a guy home from 3rd.  Wouldn't we have a better chance letting kinsler swing away and bring in Blalock on a single (maybe) or better yet hit something into the stands?

I don't fault management if their logic is sound for the decisions they make, whether the results work out or not.  However, if they make poor decisions, sooner or later the results are going to be bad, even if they work out once.

by cgolden on Apr 26, 2007 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't have a problem
Letting him swing on 2-0, he's likely to see a fastball and if anything is going to get him out of this funk it'll probably be a fastball that the pitcher know he has to throw over the plate.  Now if it was 3-0, I'd reconsider.

Also, looks like he let Kinsler swing away this time and Blalock still scored without giving an out away.
