Around SBN: So Let's Talk About Hulk Too, I Suppose

Friday morning things

Apparently, I have emotionally accepted the fact that the season is over.

Because last night, when Delmon Young hit the game winning home run, I wasn't all that upset.

Disappointed?  Sure.  But not the sick-to-my-stomach feeling I had earlier in the season with some of these losses, the way I feel when I think we've blown a game that has a chance to make a difference in late September.

In the big scheme, that home run didn't really mean anything, because this team is out of the playoff hunt and preparing to sell off veterans and look at young players.

Which is part of the reason I don't think dropping Kam Loe from the rotation, at this point, makes sense.  Who are you going to call up?  Josh Rupe is hurt.  Kevin Millwood is on the d.l.  John Koronka is what he is, and is probably starting Saturday in Millwood's slot.  You want to bump Loe so we can get a longer look at Jamey Wright, maybe?  Or audition Willie Eyre in the 5th starter role?

Give Loe a couple of months in the rotation.  Figure out if he's a viable starter, or if he's better off in the pen.

And for goodness sake, don't panic bring Eric Hurley up right now.  Let him spend the season in the minors, and see where he is next spring.

JHJ is getting a cortisone shot and is out until Monday, which means that the Ranger bench in Houston will presumably be Matt Kata, Ramon Vazquez, Kenny Lofton, Chris Stewart, and either Victor Diaz or Nelson Cruz.

Hank Blalock is supposed to be ready to go on Friday, though, so ideally, they'll send Vazquez back out and get someone who could actually pinch hit, like Jason Botts, up.

Also, I think Wes Littleton -- who flew to Orlando, but wasn't activated -- is setting a record for the most miles traveled in a season to sit in the hotel and not be activated.

But again, I'm at a loss as to why Littleton continues to be in the minors, while Scott Feldman and Willie Eyre are in the major league pen.

"I'm at a loss"
That pretty much sums it up.  I'm at a loss as to why almost all of our players are performing near the bottom of their abilities. I'm at a loss as to why none of our pitchers seem to be able to start the game with 2 scoreless innings.  I'm at a loss as to why we have the worst defense in the majors.  I'm at a loss as to why our wussie players aren't playing better after Buck "the problem" Showalter was fired.  I'm at a loss.  This is horrible and somebody needs to pay and I so wish it could be Michael Young.  I have developed a strong dislike for him over the past few seasons.

by pblack on May 18, 2007 9:39 AM CDT reply actions

michael young
What about Michael Young made you dislike him before this year?  The guy was getting two hundred hits every year, came up with clutch hit after clutch hit, and has a very likeable personality.  I understand why people are upset about the contract and his underperformance this year, but I can't understand how anyone did not love this guy before this year.

Well,

MY...
At age 25 he was a .262 career hitter. Those were the days of the great Michael Young debates. About half of us thought he would be good, and about half of us thought he was a spare part.

by Topgun22 on May 18, 2007 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Young
My problem is this. I think this team is rotten at the core.  I had problems last year when there was so much grousing about Buck by the players.  Their job is to play but it seemed to me they were using him as an excuse.  Now they got their way, they are worse than before, and the team seems totally devoid of leadership.  In my mind Young embodies the core. He is the face of the franchise, the player the others allegedly turn to, etc.  I don't have a problem with him at the plate, but I do have big problems with him in the field and in the clubhouse. I think the only way to really change the culture is to jettison the leader of the culture.

by pblack on May 18, 2007 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions

Michael Young
is the "face of the franchise", the "clubhouse leader", the man with the biggest contract on the team, and one of the Ranger posterboys for underachievement this year.  If the team is going bad, I don't see how he can avoid taking some blame.

Seasons over
The season is over, all we can hope for now that we give some of our young outfielders plenty of at bats.  Let's see what Diaz/Cruz/Botts have to offer.  No reason to waste at bats on Lofton/Wilk anymore.

Washington cannot manage a pitching staff either.  So frustrated with seeing Feldman (who has absolutely nothing) and Eyre go into a tie game.  Wasn't this staff supposed to be "pounding the strike zone?"  I thought that was the message coming out of spring.  Too many walks, this team is just bad.  Hands down, worst team in baseball, from front office to manager to players.

by RA Dickey on May 18, 2007 10:00 AM CDT reply actions

Sadly,
Cruz isn't doing much to make me want to see him much more.  Also, its not like he is some super young phenom.  He turns 27 in another month and a half.

Re: Cruz
Totally agree. He seems very lost on some at-bats. His balance is never great either.

Hopefully, several other fringe AAA-MLB players (26-27-ish) can be brought in somehow - by smaller trades, waivers, whatever.

The sooner we decide to throw in the towel, the sooner this season could become meaningful again.

I'm not impressed with Cruz either, but I would like to see him continue to play.  He seemed to hit a little in the TB series.  I am tired of the Rangers never giving a guy enough at bats to get into some type of grove (IE- Gonzalez, Botts, etc).  They have nothing to lose at this point.  This year is done.

I don't know
Kam had a good run at the end of 2005 in the rotation, and started out well last year.

He may very well be overexposed in the rotation, and need to stay in the bullpen.

But I think it is premature to make that evaluation now.

Dreamcatchers work...if your dream is to be a douchebag...

by Brian Thomas on May 18, 2007 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Learn how to read
I didn't say you can't teach a knuckleball in a day.  I said you can't turn around an ineffective starter in a day.

More idiocity from you:
You accuse me of thinking the GM position is simple, and then acknowledge that I used the word 'creative'.  Hmmmm.  Creativity is not simple by definition.

I gave a plan to how I would rebuild this team in my opinion, but it appears that you're so narcissistic that you can't accept anything that counters your opinion.  So you choose to try to attack my opinion, but really you attack a warped version of my plan, thereby not really attacking my plan.  It seems you just have trouble with simple reading and comprehension.  It could be something psychoanalytical - being you're way of exerting a pseudo-feeling of power by telling yourself that you're better than everybody else.

Anyway, if you're just trying to be funny, then that's even more sad, because it just comes across as pathetic.  Actually, it's pathetic either way you take it.

All this to say, just pass over my comments from now if you don't like them.  It appears you've developed some kind of childish vendetta against me for no good reason...or that you just thought you could be a pushover.  I just tired of it.  So screw off.

by isaacbrock on May 18, 2007 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Look
Relax a little. I certainly don't give a crap one way or the other about you. Trust me, there's no vendetta. You are probably a perfectly nice guy. I just find some of the things you said simplistic, tedious, and wrong, and to make matters worse, yesterday seemed to prove conclusively that logic, facts, and sound deductive reasoning certainly won't sway you.

I re-read the diary I linked to see if maybe I was remembering it wrong. Nope. Must have been 7 or 8 people patiently (mostly) and effectively refuting your claims. Anyone support your assertion? Did you listen? Not one damn bit. To me, that's what narcissism sounds like.

And Issac, I certainly don't tie my self esteem to any degree of baseball knowledge or blogginess, so rest assured this isn't my "way of exerting a pseudo-feeling of power by telling yourself that you're better than everybody else," whatever that means.

I guess I can "screw off," as requested, although it would be better if you could just defend your arguments like a grown man.

Dreamcatchers work...if your dream is to be a douchebag...

by Brian Thomas on May 18, 2007 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Look
I find it interesting you think my opinion is both tedious and simplistic which are damn near antonyms.  So my plan is just a drawn out, keep it simple plan?

And I didn't find many "facts" in that thread refuting me.  I found many opinions, but not many facts.  And guess what, there can be more than one logical plan that involves deductive reasoning.  There's not just one answer.

About that thread, I did listen.  And I countered every argument trying to further explain my plan.  That's not narcissism.  Sample size is talked about all the time on this site, and yet you think that because 7 or 8 people disagree with me, I should give up what I believe should happen.  That's odd, and not all that smart.

Let's just end this because clearly you aren't listening.  You seem to take pieces of what I say and infer the wrong things.  I'm tired of it.  So you relax.

AA pitcher
However, we have a stud sitting in AA right now who can hit 96 when he wants to with a filthy slider and very good change.  But like someone posted before, how good can be?  He's only putting up better numbers in the minors than anyone in a Rangers uniform in a long time.  But sure, we shouldn't move him up.  Heaven forbid we give the kid a chance and see if he can win games.  I posted this on another post:  Kam's last 5 starts....
 5/17
5.1IP  10H  6R  5ER  2BB  3K  1HR
5/12
7.0IP  8H  5R  5ER  2BB  2K  0HR
5/7
6.2IP  3H  1R  1ER  1BB  6K  1HR
5/1
4.0IP  10H  9R  7ER  1BB 2K 0HR
4/26
5.1IP  6H  7R  6ER  3BB  4K  1HR

Why let him continue to pitch and average of:
5.2IP/game  7.4H/game  5.6R/game  4.8ER/game  1.8BB/game  3.4K/game  .6HR/game

Can this annonymous AA pitcher do any worse?

Agreed, the season is over.
So what to do is the question.
  1. Pitch Loe, Tejeda, & BMac every start possible.  they will either thrive or we will know what they are capable of.
  2. Protect from injury Padilla and Millwood.  They are here next year and have the history that says they can produce.
  3. Play the youngsters in the OF.  every AB for lofton/Cat and Wilk is a lost opportunity to see if Cruz and the other kids play at this level.
  4. Time to bring up Botts and let him get his AB's.  He has done everything prior to 07 he can do in AAA.  Let's see what he can do at this level.
  5. Don't panic and rush a Hurley or another youngster up too fast.  There are too many players like Loe that need to be figured out (if and where he will fir in the majors.
  6. Trade away vets and salaries that are not part of the 07 foundation.  Cat/Wilky/Lofton/Sosa are heading up this list and get what you can for these players.
6B) Make a decision on Tex and Blalock.  Either get em signed for the long term or trade them now.
I am neutral on keep or trade but do not like holding onto a burning rope.

Bottom line is start now for 08 and go ahead with the 08 plans 100%.

other points:

  1. How can anyone not like MY??  I love the guy.
  2. All the "Buck must go" crowd are awefully quiet. As my daddy used to say "Be careful what you wish for."
  3. If someone is going to pay for this disaster it is not going to be Hicks (though he shoulders much of the cause IMO.)  It should not be Washington as this is his first managerial job and though early results look horrible it is still to early to judge IMO.  It should be Daniels who has made some of the worst decisions that are and will haunt this team for years.  But it probably will be the players.

by Bigfan16 on May 18, 2007 11:49 AM CDT reply actions

Daniels
what good does it do us to purge him?  He has made one atrocious decision, and had some other things go against him.  I don't think he needs to pay, and if he goes, Wash goes too by association.

by pblack on May 18, 2007 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Just my opinion but
I am not a JD fan.  Started way back when Soriano was traded away for a bag of beans.  He said it would lead to adding pitching and IMO it never happened.  My rational was Kenny Rogers gone and was replaced by Millwood.  We needed both Rogers and Millwood.  CY was traded away for Eaton all that accomplished was paying more for that rotation spot.  I wish JD would have been able to keep Rogers, add Millwood, add Eaton w/o giving up Eaton and then make the good trade for Tejeda before the 06 season.  Would have been a good rotation for not too much money and a good balance of contracts.  Well I type too much and it is just my opinion.  But I don't like JD.

by Bigfan16 on May 18, 2007 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Rogers
Kenny not being a Ranger after the '05 season has absolutely nothing to do with JD. Rogers burned that bridge the day he refused to apologize after assaulting Larry Rodriguez.

You can blame the "unnamed Ranger official" who accused Rogers of ducking a start- and if that person is still with the team, that's a big problem- but I don't hold JD responsible for that.

The Soriano deal didn't work out, but the opinion on that trade at the time was about 50-50 nationally in favor of the Rangers. Soriano sucked in '05, and given his attitude and lack of hustle, the Rangers were never going to get full value for him. And I don't think anyone could have predicted he'd have the year he had last year.

As for the Young/Eaton deal, yeah, that one stunk. That's the one deal I really questioned JD's intelligence on, as it made no sense even at the time it was made. The Soriano and Lee deals haven't worked out as well as hoped, but the thought process behind both trades was sound, IMO.

I meant that half of the writers who voiced opinions on the Soriano trade at the time thought it favored the Rangers, while the other half thought it favored the Nats.

Eric Hurley
I don`t post very often, but with what`s going on with the big club and all this talk about Hurley I`ve got to say something.
1. I`ve read things that Jaimey and MJH have written (after they have seen him a few times)about Hurley, a couple of things stand out to me they wrote. Maturity, excellent mound presence and excellent fastball command.
Make no mistake, without these three you simply cannot compete at the big league level.
2. I`ve seen Hurley a few times, in person, not on a computer screen. In person you get to see expressions, after a double, homerun, walk, hit batter or simply walking on and off the field.
From what I`ve seen it would not be rushing him for him to pitch in the big leagues this year. Having seen him and speaking to him he would see it as a challenge.
  1. He`s got the tools now to pitch in the big leagues and from what I`ve seen the consistency as well.
  2. Who cares if they start his "clock" now, if he does well somebody elses "clock" will probably stop(i.e.traded). Also, if he does well, that`s just another piece of the ever changing puzzle in trying to establish a big league rotation. Since trades that will be made this summer will impact the team next year, why over buy or under sell without knowing what Hurley can or cannot do?
  3. I`ve watched and followed some of the American born higher tier pitchers of the 2003-2005 draft and what most of them have in common is that they have a played higher levels of ball,i.e. USA international teams and the highest level of tournament ball. They`ve seen extremely good competition. Now that does not mean they are better pitchers than others, but I believe they handle difficult situations, stress and failure better.
Roy Firestone once asked Micheal Jordan why he wanted the ball for that last shot and why was he so successful when he took that last shot. Jordan without hesitation said "because I`ve failed so many times".
You can definitely see that in Eric Hurley, he`s one that wants the ball.

Great post and I hope you are right.
My concern is not about Hurley per se.  The Rangers have a history of not being able to manage the pitching prospects into MLB starting pitching.  I am confident that I am wrong but their successes include Helling, Drese, C. Young and recisous few others.  Wasn't Helling like 10 years or more ago.  Not exactly an impressive list of successes for that period of time.
