Jayson Stark on Andruw Jones: The Most Overrated CF Ever
Jayson Stark lays the smack down on Andruw Jones, and does an awfully good job with it.
He mixes in quotes from scouts with an intelligent use of statistics to illustrate that Andruw Jones hasn't been a great defensive centerfielder for some time, and isn't really a great offensive player.
Really good stuff, and I'm not going to try to excerpt the piece, because you need to read the whole thing to get a sense for it...
Check it out...

Rangers CF
17mm this year
They have him at a .301 eqa in both '05 and '06, and their fielding stats all show a pretty clear decline from his days as a "great" CF, to now being a very slightly below average one.
He's long been overrated as a fielder, but he's still been smacking the crap out of the ball.

I heard Stark on the Mike and Mike show earlier
By the way
My guess? He's putting the most controversial (or creating controversey where there is none) of his chapters out there to get people interested, so they will buy his book...
I generally agree
Anyway, even if it is to stir the pot, its still a good read. Certainly worth considering when deciding who to go after next off season.
Last in zone rating? who woulda thunk it.
There could be worse stories
Heard today on the Dan Patrick show while button pushing at lunch:
"When will Derek Jeter be put up with the other all time Yankee greats like Mantle, Gehrig, Ruth, and Dimaggio".
I should have put that one up as a diary to discuss, but I lost most of my life force after hearing that.
During his brief prime
I could be wrong
Nice article.
But this is good, thanks for linking to it.
Interesting but short on O analysis
I'll bet Andruw's agent is enraged by this.
Agent=Boras
As we speak, a pamphlet is being published on how Jayson Stark is illiterate.

Better than Jones defensively in CF
Curtis Granderson
Ichiro
Grady Sizemore
Mike Cameron
Wily Tavares
Aaron Rowand
Vernon Wells
There's more, I'm sure, but those are the ones I can think of right off...

he's been playing CF
Cameron?
Are you sure there are more guys that are better than Jones because you actually believe it and have seen it or because Stark says so and did some kind of voodoo statistical analysis to prove his point?

must be one hell of a dropoff
Hmmm...
Corey Patterson, Vernon Wells, Grady Sizemore, Curtis Granderson, Ichiro, Mike Cameron and Willy Tavarez off the top of my head.
Guys like Juan Pierre and Johnny Damon have far superior range, but noodle arms, so I don't know about them.
Then you've got young guys like Felix Pie and Chris Young who are probably better, but that I just don't know enough about to rate.

Jones
About A. Jones...
But the truth is, Andruw Jones would be our second best hitter. He's also better than Carlos Lee, who a lot of people liked on this team and thought we should have signed to a similarly huge deal. Plus, even if he can't play center field for the next 5-6 years, he can still be a very useful player.
Basically, I don't know how you can be okay with giving MY a 5 year/75 million dollar deal when he's 31 and NEVER played Gold Glove defense, and then think it's bad to give Andruw Jones a 5-6/90-110 million dollar deal when he's a year younger, plays a position that is not harder than shortstop, and actually was the best defender at his position for sometime.
Although, I'm also confused why everyone is ready to get rid of a .900 OPS guy (Tex). A.Jones is an .850 OPS guy (.894/.922/.833 the past 3 years), which is certainly solid. But the only way it makes sense is if you are saying (much like with MY) that you'd rather pay your money to get good hitting numbers out of traditionally hard places to find them (SS, CF, 2B) than simply just pay the best hitters period (usually 1B, 3B, Corner OF, and DH).
