More Seamheads sniping

More interesting exchanges over at the DMN blog...

Tim MacMahon mentions the "gunshy" quote, and uses it to launch into another "Jon Daniels turned the Brewers and Padres into first place teams" riff...

Evan Grant responds, both to the "gunshy" allegations and the suggestion that getting draft picks for Carlos Lee was irrelevant...

MacMahon responds, pointing out that most draft picks are busts, thus making the fact that the Rangers got draft pick compensation for Lee meaningless...

And Grant riffs on the value of draft picks, along with dissecting the Brewer trade, again...

I've said this before, but I just don't understand the carping from people who want to proclaim the trade with the Brewers a bust.  The Padre trade, absolutely.  The Soriano/Wilkerson trade turned out poorly.  But the Milwaukee trade?  That was one of the better ones the Rangers have made...

Tim MacMahon.
Is there a more ignorant douche in all of sports journalism?  Seriously, he makes me miss Fraley.

gotta be schtick
I never read the Seamheads blog until MacDouche started writing... You only pay attention to media if you really like it or really hate it.
What I am saying is the Seamheads blog has gone WWE on us and MacMahon is the heel... he is not the baseball or Rangers beat writer so he doesn't reduce the paper's credibility, but he riles up the crowd. We have all been played!

Agreed
McMahon's idiocy just enhances people's perception of Grant's knowledge. McMahon provides an artificially low benchmark for knowledge of the Rangers.
Well Mr. Burns had done it. The power plant had won it. With Roger Clemens clucking all the while.

Yep....
I think they stumbled on it in innocently with an early back and forth.  Once they saw the hits increase though......well maybe it behooves them to bicker now even if neither is consciously making an effort to annoy the other.

1st Place Brewers
Daniels is responsible for the Brewers being in 1st place?  I had no idea he traded Prince Fielder and Ben Sheets.

I'm really enjoying this
It's hard to tell how much of this is schtick, but you get the sense that Grant and McMahon really don't like each other.

This crap just annoys me
I am in the camp that the jury is still out on JD.  He got CREAMED in the SD trade, but the other two that are brought up are such crap.

IMO we won the Milwaukee trade, and if not we didn't lose it by much.  CoCo would not be here as his option would not have been picked up.  Mench is better than most of our outfielders, but would he really make any kind of difference?  Nix is a throw in at this point.  We had Lee, the prize offensive weapon last year, for 2 months to compete and it just didn't work out.  We also have Cruz, whom I don't think a lot of, but would probably rather have than Mench.  And of course the picks

The Soriano fiasco was just that.  People seem to conveniently forget NOBODY wanted him.  We shopped him for a freakin YEAR, and got offered Kyle Lohse types for him.  Yeah Wilk has been miserable, but damn not like we turned something great down.

The San Diego trade should give people PLENTY of ammunition to whine about as it was a bad trade THAT day, and has only gotten worse.  Stick to that one!

Brewers trade
I think the problem is that people are only looking at how much better the Brewers are now with Coco and the occasional Mench sighting.  The Rangers have a draft pick that may or may not work out, but we probably won't know for a few years.

Most of LSB realizes that Mench and Coco staying with the Rangers wouldn't have worked out, but I believe it irritates people to see them immediately impacting the Brewers for the better.

"Fire Jon Daniels!" Someone has to start it.

Mench has had no impact with the Brewers.
He has a sub-.700 OPS in limited playing time.  I wouldn't really call that an "immediate impact" for the good.

Coco has been very good (with the exception of TBiA) this year, but after his lousy 2006 run, there was no reason to project that he'd bounce back like he did.  He clearly still doesn't have his head issues with TBiA resolved.

Brewers trade good?
I wouldn't go so far as to say it was a good trade.  I guess it wasn't bad, but to be a good trade, I'd like to see us getting a return on it less than a year later, and all we have is Nelson Cruz, plus some draft picks from Carlos Lee leaving.  I'd say it was so-so.  If we had Cordero, we probably wouldn't have Gagne, but we'd still be in the same position of having a blue-chip commodity that we can dangle to teams in the pending fire sale.

I was with you
until that last part. We DO have the blue chip commodity to dangle, plus the picks. What we're out is the extra money that Gagne could make over Cordero. Of course most of that would be wasted on Mench.
