Rangers fans fear Julio Borbon
I just wanted to mention something...
I don't think I've ever seen a baseball team's fanbase so collectively terrified about what the team is going to do with a draft pick, as it seems Rangers fans currently are about the possibility of the Rangers picking Julio Borbon with the 24th (or even worse, the 17th) pick in the draft on Thursday.

Not sold on him...
Borbon
Borbon
If Borbon has decent power, he might be able to overcome the low OBP and become a Carl Crawford type, or if he's got good power, Torii Hunter. If not, he's headed for the Juan Pierre/Joey Gathright bin- and the upside of players like that is usually pretty small.
i might be missing something here
The more I research this guy, the more I wouldn't mind the Rangers drafting him...

NCAA Stats
Ok State - Keanon Simon - .895 OPS
Texas - Jordan Danks - .879 OPS
Texas - Nick Peoples - .909 OPS
I could not find that OBP and SLG for Evan Frey of Mizzou but it has to be over .920 since his avg was .343 and he walked 39 times and had 20 xbh(216 AB)...

Ellsbury's OPS
Borbon (.370 OBP / .876 OPS) is no Jacoby Ellsbury. He's not even in Ellsbury's league defensively.
What I fear is that they try to erase the mistake of not having taken Ellsbury at #18 two years ago by making the mistake of taking Borbon at #17 this year. Daniels has already screwed up once by trying to erase a mistake by making another mistake.

Do you know
SIX. Six walks in 40 games. Does that sound like a leadoff hitter in this day and age?

Byrd

I agree that
Anyway, my point wasn't so much that Byrd needed to play as that I'd like to maximize my assets with Lofton and Sosa, and burning them out isn't going to do that. Lofton will look better if he's rested some and only played vs righties.

Don't get me wrong though, I'd still rather him get abs than Sosa.

Sosa trade
I think it depends...
Me too....
I don't think so......
More likely he's playing RF for the Rangers the rest of the year.
Now if he really heats up against righties I'll take it back.
Awesomely stupid trade idea at FJM
Here's the gist - Twins trade Hunter to the Yankees in exchange for A-Rod (if A-Rod agrees to not exercise his opt out clause). Yankees sign Hunter to 3 year/$45 mill contract AND essentially pay the Twins the difference between A-Rod's contract and Hunter's contract. Essentially, the Yankees get Torii Hunter while paying an amount equal to what they were paying A-Rod.
Twins to Yankees "we'll trade you a decent player for your great player BUT ONLY IF you give us a batch of money to pay the great player."
Who'd be stupid enough to do that? Oh, wait, never mind.
I missed the best part
Man.

College Players Disappoint
On both the hitting and pitching sides, the college talent level has disappointed. When it comes to position players, there's Georgia Tech catcher Matt Wieters, and then an uninspiring group of low-ceiling safe picks that many evaluators have trouble getting excited about. "It's a very, very, thin position group in the college ranks," said one scouting director. "Health is definitely a factor here," he added. "If guys like the pair at Tennessee, [outfielder Julio] Borbon and [catcher J.P.] Arencibia can get healthy, they might separate themselves -- but overall, the talent is just all right at best."
Another scouting director saw the lack of elite talent moving some players into draft positions that are significantly higher than the talent merits.
"There are those teams out there, that for philosophical purposes, are going to focus on college players," said the lead scout. "That's going to push some guys up into the first round that don't belong there. So you're drafting a decent player, but his draft status and bonus is that of a future star." Another agreed with the assessment by adding, "There's just not a lot of guys where you look at them and say, 'This guy is really going to hit'."

more in today's BP
On Borbon (#25), he offers this:
"25. Julio Borbon, OF, Tennessee
Pros: Top college leadoff hitter is plus-plus runner with line-drive bat; plus range in center field.
Cons: Hampered by an ankle injury much of the year; not an instinctual basestealer; limited power ceiling; weak arm."

from Baseball America
"At his best, Borbon is a top-of-the-order hitter who makes sharp contact and changes games with his plus speed. He's more than a slap-and-run type, with above-average bat speed and some sock in his bat. A Dominican native, he has an aggressive approach and doesn't walk often. His defense is adequate, but he could improve his reads and routes. A popular comparison for Borbon is Johnny Damon, for the pop in his bat as well as his speed and well-below-average arm."
