Wednesday a.m. stuff

Great couple of games last night.  I was sitting there, when Gagne came into game 1, thinking, "No, don't bring him in...Benoit is pitching great, so leave him in for the 9th, and then you've got Gagne available for game 2."  I didn't think there was any way Gagne would pitch in game 1 and in game 2...

But if there were any doubts from potential suitors about Gagne's ability to bounce back, picking up non-save and a pair of saves over a two day period should have put them to rest.

And getting 13 2/3 innings from Kam Loe (who got hosed on a phantom foul tip call against Raul Ibanez, and should have gotten the win) and John Rheinecker was huge, keeping the bullpen from being completely run into the ground.

13 games back of Anaheim now, and 3.5 games back of Oakland, 11 games under .500.  Getting single digits in games under .500 would seem like a major success, at this point...

Evan Grant notes that yesterday's work lowered the Rangers' ERA for July to 3.49, the lowest in the A.L.  Amazing...where the hell was this back in April and May?

And Mike Heika has some love for Travis Metcalf, who was outstanding yesterday.

Heika also says that Akinori Otsuka won't be activated before the trading deadline, so scratch him from the players the Rangers might possibly deal.  That sucks, given how in demand relievers are, but it also increases the chances that Joaquin Benoit is dealt this week.

Orange County Register columnist Randy Youngman thinks the Angels should be offering Casey Kotchman, Brandon Wood, and a pitching prospect to the Rangers for Mark Teixeira, but given Bill Stoneman's history of refusing to part with his top prospects, he doesn't think it is likely.

The L.A. Times says the Angels are talking to the Rangers about Teixeira and the ChiSox about Paul Konerko.

In Beantown, the Boston Herald says simply that the Red Sox are still interested in, and in on, Teixeira, with recently DFA'd Oakland outfielder Bobby Kielty a fallback option.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution talks about Jarrod Saltalamacchia's dealing with the ongoing trade rumors, particularly the Mark Teixeira rumors (since Saltalamacchia would almost certainly head back to Texas if Atlanta acquires Teixeira).  With Julio Franco starting five of the last six for the Braves at first base, and Brian McCann entrenched behind the plate, Saltalamacchia is relegated to a bench role right now.

Bob Wickman, incidentally, blew a save for the Braves last night, while the Tigers saw their bullpen have a complete meltdown against the ChiSox.  So perhaps there will be some increased interest in the Rangers bullpen arms...

And there are several articles in the New York papers today, saying that the Yankees want Teixeira but aren't going to give up Philip Hughes and Joba Chamberlain to get him.  One specifically mentions how the Yankees played the waiting game with Philly last year, and ended up getting Bobby Abreu for nothing, although I have a hard time imagining something similar happening with Teixeira.  If the Yanks aren't going to part with Hughes or Chamberlain (or even Ian Kennedy and Alan Horne, as some places have suggested), they just don't have the pieces to get a deal done.

Gagne
But if there were any doubts from potential suitors about Gagne's ability to bounce back, picking up a win and a pair of saves over a two day period should have put them to rest.

Except, of course, that he gave up 3 runs in that first game.  Although I guess you could spin that too, since he 'bounced back' and got two saves in a doubleheader the next day...  Here's where Daniels earns his salary.

I think
what he did on Monday was more impressive since he gave up those three runs on purpose so he could show his salt and earn a little scratch for the save...

he didn't get a save Monday
Forget Johnny Bench, we got Gerry "the Jet" Laird

and
he would have gotten an incentive whether it was a save or not

Yeah?
yeah? yeah?  Well...so?  haha

Ok so my grassy knoll theory is shot, but it did seem as if he bore down extra hard after that homer.  He was probably just pissed that he gave up that dinger...

Whatever the case, he is a beast.  And if yesterday was my last time to see him live in a Rangers uniform, I'll be sad...but I'll understand...

Salty
is the bare minimum level of prospect that can come back in the Tex deal for it to be considered a wash in my opinion.

Daniels better not just settle for a lesser offer.  Keep Tex and trade him in the offseason when teams have greater flexibility with their rosters if that's the case.

Gagne
There's no doubt in my mind that the Rangers would have preferred to rest Gagne the second game, but he must have gone to Wash and said "put me in." Remember, Gagne's on a one year deal, if he gets hurt again his career is pretty much screwed. Gagne showed a lot of guts and that he's an ultimate team player by taking the ball three time in 24 hours.

gagne
washington said that gagne told him if there was a save opp in game 2 he would be ready to go in.

yeah, that and...
the fact that he's chasing down incentives.
I stand corrected

by rkh on Jul 25, 2007 9:52 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

it makes no sense
that he would risk getting hurt and losing a potential long term, big money contract to get a $200,000 GF bonus. Those bonuses will come, he doesn't need to squeeze 3 GFs into 2 days for financial incentives.

by Randy Richardson on Jul 25, 2007 10:01 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Makes perfect sense
because he is playing for a contract next year. He needs to prove himself to be healthy so that he can get a top dollar contract in the off season.

by RangerMad on Jul 25, 2007 10:15 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gagne
Gagne doesn't seem to be the guy to selfishly pitch for a contract.

And if he were that guy with a history of arm and back problems it would only hurt him to do what he's done the last couple of days.

If he's truly pitching for a contract, that's the last thing he would want to do.  He's already earned his money for next year, all he has to do is stay healthy and pitching 3 times in 2 days isn't the way to stay healthy.

However, it is best for the team.

ERA, Angels
I knew the pitching had been better, but I was floored when I read that this morning.  Best in the AL in July?  3.49?  Wow.  It helps my contention that the rotation could be adequate next year.  They are not as good as this last month, nor are they as bad as they were early in the year.

I would think the Angels would be more interested in Glaus, since he would represent a bigger upgrade at 3B than Teixiera would over Kotchman at 1B.

Regarding Salty, am I the only one who doesn't understand why they would start Franco over him so many times?

Salty
It's almost like they are hiding him. If he is so good, wouldn't he play over a 50 year old? And I have seen him play a few times, he is good and has definite potential. But, I can't figure out why he isn't playing.

With the big Wickman stink last night (and Gonzalez injury and Soriano disappointing), who knows maybe a Teix/RP/Sosa for Salty/JoJo/Elvis is possible.

by atlantaranger on Jul 25, 2007 9:56 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Only 7 HR allowed as well, which is lowest in ML.
All of this against some pretty good teams: Boston, LAAAAA, Cleveland, Oakland, Seattle.  The Rangers are 7-2 against non-first-place teams and 5-7 against first-place teams.
People rarely live up to their baby pictures.

Salty Franco
Regarding Salty, am I the only one who doesn't understand why they would start Franco over him so many times?

Maybe they are teaching Salty a lesson about respecting his elders. When Franco was Salty's age, Salty wasn't even zero yet. He hadn't even bothered becoming a faetus yet! I'd say that's not showing much respect for his elders, wouldn't you? I imagine that's why Franco is playing - to learn that boy some respect.

by Brian Hayes on Jul 25, 2007 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Franco
He was Salty's age twice, since he was 25 before the Phillies traded him (and 4 other guys) for Von Hayes, but then was magically 21 when he arrived in Cleveland in that deal.

Franco
He's so old, I'm not even sure Salty's parents were born when Franco was Salty's age...

atlanta
chipper jones (i know hes hardly the GM, but still..) is saying how they need a lefty reliever and thinks that should be a part of the trades.

i dont think it would be a big deal to include Mahay with tex to make that deal go through, hes been great so far and could legitimately help out their pen down the stretch, meanwhile the rangers still have CJ and some other lefty options like rheino, murray (although i saw he wasnt doing that well) and others.

and again, i hope the rangers extend benoit rather than trade him.  shouldnt be expensive, seems to have become a solid setupman, i dont think he would have THAT much trade value being that its his last year, and i do think he would re-sign with the rangers since hes got a manager that likes him and a good role.

230/353/380
I was alot higher on Saltalamacchia until I saw that.

That was Salty's line last year in AA, he was much better repeating this year before his call up.  I haven't seen him play but haven't heard that he is a defensive wizzard.  I don't know if I'm against trading for him but I'm alot less excited knowing that

Salty in AA
That was also in the Southern League, which, IIRC, is a pitcher's league. His home park had a factor of 91 for homers, and was neutral to slightly favorable for pitchers in all other regards except doubles, where it had a factor of 118, according to Baseball Think Factory's park factors chart.

numbers
Ok, but he was still just 21 last year, and in 2007 his AA numbers were .309/.404/.617 and he's hitting .285/.336/.416 in the MLB as a 22 year old and he's a catcher.  I'm still pretty excited if he's coming here.

Hmmm....Teixeira or Kielty?
"In Beantown, the Boston Herald says simply that the Red Sox are still interested in, and in on, Teixeira, with recently DFA'd Oakland outfielder Bobby Kielty a fallback option."

Elsewhere in Beantown, I've learned that the Patriots are interested in acquiring Ladanian Tomlinson, with Tyson Thompson a fallback option.

Also, the Celtics are still interested in acquiring Lebron James, with Zhi-Zhi Wang a fallback option.

I really hope
Boston is the trade target.  I like their potential packages the best.

Arlington
That kind of mentality only works in Arlington.

Plan: Sign DiceK
Fallback: Jamey Wright

Plan: Sign Zito
Fallback: Mike Wood (even though Wood may be more effective this year)

Plan: Trade Blalock + for Josh Beckett
Fallback: Trade best pitcher/top prospect for Adam Eaton and set-up man.

DON'T LOOK NOW...
...but the Yanks have put a string of wins together to get back in it...

... well, the Wild Card anyway...

man... i'm just salivating at the thought of Cashman and Epstein in a bidding war... those two teams will do anything to beat each other...

is Cashman still on the hook this season?  if he wants to compete, it's gonna cost him...

Also
Have you seen their offense lately.  Their runs in their 5 game winning streak.

7, 17, 21, 9, 9.

I don't think that they are in on Teix at all.  Maybe Gagne, Benoit and maybe even Sosa.

I'd really like to see those two fighting over Teix.  If they were, the Yanks would cave on Hughes or Joba the Hut.

I don't think that is going to be the case.
