On Saltalamacchia, Loney, and trade prospects

There's been a lot of squawking from some Rangers fans that the Atlanta offer isn't good enough, that Jarrod Saltalamacchia isn't all that and that the Rangers need something better than him as the headliner of a package.

Now, given the choice between Saltalamacchia (I hate the name "Salty", and refuse to refer to him as that) and James Loney, I'd probably lean towards Loney, but it isn't really a slam-dunk.

Loney is a year older than Saltalamacchia (almost exactly a year, in fact...he was born on 5/7/84, Saltalamacchia on 5/2/85), and of course, is going to play nothing but first base (albeit very well), while Saltalamacchia can probably be a regular major league catcher, at least for a few more years.

PECOTA's projections for Loney from 2008-2011 all run in the .280s, while Saltalamacchia is in the .270s in 2008 and 2009 and in the .280s in 2009 and 2010.

Saltalamacchia struggled mightily in AA last year, but it is worth pointing out that he was 20 when last season started and was dealing with a wrist injury...and even with his poor average and middling power, he was drawing a ton of walks, with a .353 OBP to go with his .230 average.

Loney put up some huge surface numbers in Las Vegas last year, hitting .380/.426/.546, but Las Vegas is a great hitter's park, and OBP and slugging were hugely average-driven...his walk rate and power was very unimpressive.

This year has been weird for them, as Loney has been pretty poor in the minors, hitting .279/.345/.382 for Las Vegas, but terrific in the majors, hitting .362/.414/.551 for the Dodgers.  Saltalamacchia has been the reverse, hitting .309/.404/.617 in AA but just .285/.336/.416 in the majors.

As a point of comparison, when Mark Teixeira was 22 (the same age Saltalamacchia is now), he was hitting .320/.411/.593 in half a season in high-A and .316/.415/.591 in a half a season in AA.

BA had Saltalamacchia ranked #36 coming into this season, Loney #44.  As a point of reference, John Danks was #56 and Eric Hurley #68.  BA felt that Saltalamacchia was a guy with big power potential who might have to move from behind the plate, while Loney is a guy who will hit for average and play great first base defense, but has questions about his power.  Mark Grace is the comparison you hear a lot with Loney.

BP ranked Loney #54, and at the mid-season mark said that his stock was unchanged, while Saltalamacchia was at #51, and the mid-season review showed him as having moved his stock up.

My gut says that Loney's the safer bet to be a good major leaguer, while Saltalamacchia is the better bet to be a great major leaguer, particularly if he can stay behind the plate.  And after having gone through all this, I'm starting to think I've been swayed to preferring Saltalamacchia to Loney, all things being equal.

All things, of course, aren't equal, and the other prospects will play a role as well in what offer to take.  But if you are expecting to get Loney and Clayton Kershaw (or Loney, Kershaw and something else), I think you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

The other thing to remember about the Atlanta deal, if Elvis Andrus comes over, is that teams love young, toolsy middle infielders.  Remember, a couple of years ago, everyone wanted Joaquin Arias from the Rangers, and if Texas grabs Andrus, he'll be a valuable trade chip down the road.

And speaking of trade chips, the other thing to keep in mind with Saltalamacchia is that a lot of other teams love him.  Pittsburgh has supposedly been after him, and even if you don't think Saltalamacchia is all that, if you could flip him to the Pirates to get a package that included Ian Snell, or to get Tom Gorzelanny, that may end up being a better deal than anything else you would end up with in a Teixeira trade.

Anyway, this is just food for thought...but I do think that those who are already killing any Atlanta trade, saying that Saltalamacchia isn't all that and the Rangers need to get something else, are not giving Saltalamacchia enough credit.

Trade for Salts
Right now. Kthanks.

Solid points
While I may seem to be down on Saltalamacchia (happy? didn't call him salty) it's more that I'm down on what would be coming back to Texas with him.
I feel the dodgers have more they could send back in return but yes, kershaw isn't going to be part of it.

As far as flipping Saltalamacchia for snell, I had honestly forgotten about that rumor with the pirate's and it's certainly something to consider.

On Elvis Andrus, sure people like their toolsy infielders but where has that gotten the rangers with arias? He hasn't been dealt for anything worthwhile. I just hate the thought of taking a guy like him and hoping he can be turned into something good in another deal.

Well
Part of the thing with Arias is that the manager and g.m. really loved him and didn't want to trade him...

I don't have a problem with the Rangers getting a guy because they think he can have more value in a trade down the line than they are giving up for him now.  I think that's a large part of the thinking with Borbon...

speaking of Borbon
When is he going to sign?  Is the cutoof in Aug.?
I stand corrected

August 15
Most of the players who are going to get above slot money are going to sign in the days right before the deadline, so as to not influence other teams. He will sign, but it will be at the very last minute.

Pecota projections
I take that's EQA you're quoting?

I think Salty's far more valuable than Loney, because their bats are comparable and one is a catcher.

And, sorry, the effort of typing out Salty's full name will force me to call him Salty. Apologies.

Sorry Adam but, you have been over-ruled.

Man law. Salty stays, no matter what.

Those
rules cleary violate the Dumpmaster D approach of giving nicknames. If it works, it works.

by BHill on Jul 26, 2007 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No no no. RIF.
Just because you can quote the rules, doesn't mean you understand them.

By your logic, Ersty is a clever nickname.

Is Salty a sailor? Is Salty a curmudgeonly, somewhat dirty old man? Is Salty a big fan of margaritas and mexican food?

Giving someone a nickname that merely bastardizes their given name is the height of creative laziness.

Is too reminiscent of Halos fans calling Darin Erstad "Ersty".

my only hangup
is on knowing if the rangers plan on playing him at catcher.

it just doesnt seem to me like they would stress all season long that laird needs to worry about the pitchers not offense, and then pull him out for an offensive replacement.

and we have no 1b if tex is gone anyway.  but if he does play 1b, he is much less valuable to us.............

so as much as it seems like salty fits here. it seems like a somewhat messy situation.

maybe it would be more of a platoon at catcher with salty (i like it) dh'ing a couple times a week.....

so yeah, to give a really fair judgement on the trade id need to know what the rangers plans are, which obviously only JD and a few others know.

but if we can get the full salty/andrus/jo-jo trade for tex + lesser reliever then im up for it.

although i wish andrus wasnt part of it.  if the braves rate him a B+ prospect or whatever, id prefer another B+ thats not the speedy MI mold..  just dont care for those guys, so few of them pan out

by DSheppard on Jul 26, 2007 10:51 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think
You will be more unhappy with Loney's offense at 1B than Saltalamacchia's.

Saltalamacchia will likely have more power and a higher OBP... neither will be as good as Tex. The only thing Saltalamacchia won't do that Loney and Tex will is hit .300. Personally, I don't care if Loney can hit .320 with a .390 OBP when I think Saltalamacchia will hit .270 with a .390 OBP and hit more HR.

New Name for Saltalamacchia
in case he becomes a Ranger.  In Italian, his name translates roughly to "it jumps, it stains", so let's just call him Jarrod JumpStain.

If he is traded to Texas along with Harrison and Andrus, call me happy.

Adam
You must be rooting for the Dodgers simply because I would hate to have to spell Saltalamacchia on an every day basis. But seriously, I think it would all depend on the players outside of loney and "salty". And while I think salty would be better over the long haul, I think the dodgers just have more to offer us as far as other players go.

Preaching to the choir...
There are only 3 reasons I can see people having for undervaluing Salty:

1.They looked at his AA numbers, and did not realize he was hurt.

2.They are wanting way to much for Tex to consider any reasonable trade.

3.They want to plant the seed, so that if the deal is made...they can blame JD for not getting enough.

Believe me I am already prepared for it. JD could get GOD to play 1B for us, and someone will complain that JD got screwed on the deal and could have had Kershaw.

Saltalamacchia
It's a hell of a lot easier to spell than Mientkiewicz or Pierzynski, that's for sure. Or Doug Gwosdz, for that matter.

My wife is a Maori from New Zealand
They typically have 8 or 9 middle names, or more precisely, what would appear to be 8 or 9 names to you and I.

Of course, the lazyass, anglo-saxon government there routinely doesn't even do them the courtesy of publishing a shortened Maori version on their birth certificates.

Her middle name was ceremoniously morphed into Rebecca.

his family came in some different way.  About the only way families kept their names back then was porting at a back water small port when they initially arrived in america.  thats how we ended up keeping our family name which i think is worse or longer to spell than salty's.

Ellis Island
I have absolutely no idea where my family came into the States, but we're English, Irish, and Scottish, so all my family names stayed intact. The most exotic name from any of my family lines was O'Banion; otherwise, they're all very common surnames.

Does anyone else
Really want the main piece to be a top flight pitcher?

I guess losing Teix would pretty much bring this offense down to a oakland like suckiness, but man I just desperatly want some solid pitching top to bottom in Texas for once.

Salty.... do it do it...
get him now, i think this will hands down be the best offer we can get, and if we can trade him for gorzelanny, well even better because that is who i wanted in the first place. But i think with his name and youth(meaning the team holds his rights for many years) if the guy puts up numbers he will quickly become a fan favorite.  People will want to embrace him for no other reason than we trade Tex for him and want it to work out. And you make think that sounds dumb but people LOVE wild ass names because they usually accompany chants or some such

No shit
This trade deadline is like losing your virginity.  You think about it constantly and anxiously beforehand.  You get really nervous as the moment gets closer and boom it's done.

Then you spend the next few days wondering if you did it right and what you could have done differently.  And wondering if you would have been better off going with someone else.
