Stark on the Teixeira situation

Jayson Stark has an update on the Mark Teixeira situation...

In a nutshell, he's echoing what we've been thinking the last 24 hours or so...Anaheim is still in and is offering Casey Kotchman and Joe Saunders plus a third player, but the third player won't be Nick Adenhart or Brandon Wood.  Atlanta has an offer out there but is still trying to get C.J. Wilson as part of the deal.  And Jon Daniels is waiting to see if Boston, the Dodgers, or the Yankees will step in and offer Buchholz, Kershaw, or Chamberlain (or Hughes) at the 11th hour.

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution thinks Atlanta will end up snagging Teixeira and a reliever, likely Ron Mahay (although they would really like C.J. Wilson or Eric Gagne).

well
as long as they don't do something stupid and throw cj in as a reliever in a trade package then i'm pretty much ok with whatever at this point.
i just want it done

could the braves
offer enough to justify including cj in a trade? (in our minds at least)

by Lonerangers on Jul 28, 2007 11:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't
think they have anything else that would push us to include him, unless they somehow add Reyes and another piece, which i still probably wouldn't do.

reyes
I really am not that interested in him, I like harrison better.

that's why it would have to be both + another guy

not in my mind
i don't really think they have anything to justify throwing cj into a deal, unless they dangle a young pitcher back at us with mlb experience like davies who i'd have no interest in and think cj could do better than as a starter.
Spider pig, Spider pig does whatever a spider pig does

by rentz on Jul 28, 2007 11:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

what if
we got a package including francouer, saltalamacchia and maybe a guy like davies.

Franc would instantly upgrade our outfield, and if saltalamacchia is a good as everyone else says he is then we would be in pretty good shape for a while.

by Lonerangers on Jul 28, 2007 11:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

francouer
what would be the point of the braves dealing him though?
Spider pig, Spider pig does whatever a spider pig does

by rentz on Jul 28, 2007 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

no i know
they wouldn't do it, i just think that if they did, that's a deal we have to jump on.

by Lonerangers on Jul 28, 2007 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

and
who will the Braves play in RF?

by Randy Richardson on Jul 28, 2007 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well
saltalamacchia's not playing now, so tex would replace francouer's production, and then some. Then the braves could have an outfield of willie harris, matt diaz and andruw jones, and maybe call up a guy like brandon jones. Not the best oufield out there but harris and diaz have been very good this year, both playing mostly full time, and you know what you're getting from jones.

by Lonerangers on Jul 28, 2007 11:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

its not even worth arguing
Francoeur has just no chance of getting involved in this trade.

if you want more players you are talking minor leaguers.

by DSheppard on Jul 28, 2007 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

never said he actually would
the guy above said he didn't think the braves had enough to justify and cj trade, and i simply asked what would be done if francouer was added. Purely hypothetical

by Lonerangers on Jul 28, 2007 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

hypothetically
I'm no francouer fan. I think he strikes out too much and doesn't have the ops to make that tolerable. If you think people complain about wilkerson, imagine what they'd do with francouer.
Spider pig, Spider pig does whatever a spider pig does

Wilk and Francoeur
Francoeur- AVG .293 | HR 11 | RBI 68  | OBP .336 | SLG .433  SO- 22.1 %

Wilkerson- AVG .225 | HR 15 | RBI 46  | OBP .304 | SLG .476  SO- 35.2 %

by coolaid on Jul 28, 2007 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well
i knew someone would try to directly compare them after i said that.
Francouer is a better player than wilk, my main point was he's a guy who k's a lot and doesn't have great ops.
Spider pig, Spider pig does whatever a spider pig does

by rentz on Jul 28, 2007 11:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well
you're right his ops isn't very high but its not like he's going to reach ryan howard strike out numbers. Hell wilkerson has 10 less k's in almost 200 less AB's

by Lonerangers on Jul 28, 2007 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Francoeur is great
with RISP and compared to Wilkerson he is younger better defensively and doesn't strike out as much as Wilkerson.

by coolaid on Jul 28, 2007 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

risp
yeah, we already have a guy great with RISP... sosa.
lot of good he's doing.
again, NOT saying wilkerson is better... he was just the best comparison on the rangers i could think of as having high K #'s that people gripe about
Spider pig, Spider pig does whatever a spider pig does

by rentz on Jul 28, 2007 11:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

whoa
if you're complaining about a guy who is 7 yrs younger and only strikes out 15% of his plate appearances, compared to wilkerson's 35% and is hitting 70 points higher, then we have a problem here. No he doesn't walk as much but i think i might take the chance on him.

Again not saying the deal makes sense though.

by Lonerangers on Jul 28, 2007 11:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

22.1% according to the stats listed above.

again, not saying wilkerson is better.
all i'm saying is he doesn't do much for me.

Stark's worried
about JD waiting too long too.  I've been saying that since Thursday.  Tonight should be Tex's last game as a Ranger, no reason to play him tomorrow.  Let everybody know they have until a certain time tomorrow to come with a deal, and if nobody does send him to Atlanta.  If Schuerholz pulls out of this deal because JD waited to long it'll be a bigger screw up than the CY trade.

by nrrh on Jul 28, 2007 11:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Schuerholz
He'd only do that if there were a better deal out there for the Braves.

You've got guys in the clubhouse already talking about Teixeira being there.

You've got your future HOF CF'er in his last year with the team, and guys like Chipper and Smoltz who are on the backside of their careers.

If he says, "we do the deal by noon Sunday or I'm out," and ends up with nothing Tuesday night, that's a bad situation for him.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 28, 2007 11:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
Hopefully this doesn't come back to bite me but I think that Scherholz has been screwed over by his own team during the discussions about a possible trade.

It appears as though Daniels has the upper hand because Atlanta doesn't have a better option right now, at least as far as I have heard.

Daniels can probably wait until Tuesday afternoon, if he wanted, and then go back to Atlanta and say 'deal' if nothing better comes along.

The depressing thing about tennis is that no matter how good I get, I'll never be as good as a wall.

trade deadline in general
daniels really appears to have the trade deadline on a silver platter for him.

best hitter on the market.  best relief pitcher on the market.  one of the better outfielders on the market (already traded).

bullpens accross the mlb struggling.
braves struggling, team and fans now getting desperate for tex and the hopeful spark to get their team going again.

even someone like wigginton going to a non contender.  cincinatti apparently not doing much with dunn (of course, who knows whats going on behind the scenes).

its all set up for him... now hes just got to make the deals.  of course, thats not exactly easy.

by DSheppard on Jul 28, 2007 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

the only way it could be better for JD
is if he still had a healthy Aki to deal.
Me and Billy the Kid never got along. I didn't like the way he cocked his hat and he wore his gun all wrong.

by tricer on Jul 29, 2007 1:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yep
there's more pressure on Schuerholz. It is very unusual to have team leaders talking about how great it would be to add a specific player. It would be a complete letdown for the Braves if they don't add Tex or some other significant piece by the deadline.

by Randy Richardson on Jul 28, 2007 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

This losing streak isn't a concern
to you? Maybe it's just paranoia, but something about a team that could be just one game above .500 by Tuesday afternoon trading its top prospect for a stretch run. Or at least that's what the hyper-panicky voice Rangers fan voice in my head says.

by Brett Perryman on Jul 28, 2007 11:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Braves
they have 9 games remaining against both Philly and the Mets, so they control their own destiny.

by Randy Richardson on Jul 28, 2007 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
it's not like they're going to be out of the race. They just don't have the look of a serious WS contender. I know, I know, neither did the Cards last fall. Like I said, I'm worried because it's the Rangers and there is something to lose.

by Brett Perryman on Jul 28, 2007 11:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's a little worrisome
And with someone like Schuerholz, you figure that's not going to be as likely to make him panic as another g.m.

Still, given their situation, given where they are in the playoff race, I have a hard time seeing them backing off.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 28, 2007 11:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Question...
4 scenarios:

Dodgers: Loney, Ethier, Kershaw, BUT we have to give up CJ Wilson

Angels: Kotchman, our choice of Santana or Saunders, and a minor prospect basically

Braves: Salt., Harrison and Andrus

D-Backs: Jackson, Brett Anderson and Quentin

Which do you take?

by Pitcher15 on Jul 28, 2007 11:38 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'll take ...
I'll stick with Atlanta ... then Dodgers ... then Arizona ... then Anaheim.

by northtexan95 on Jul 28, 2007 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

A
Obviously have no interest in losing Wilson but it's Kershaw.

by Brett Perryman on Jul 28, 2007 11:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I
will take the Dodgers, even thought I would rather keep CJ and offer Benoit,Mahay, and Gagne first

by fsujon on Jul 28, 2007 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Scenarios
Braves
D-Backs
Dodgers (and I might ask them to throw in Betemit if we have to give up CJ, just so he can replace Hairston or Relaford)

Angels

"Then I met some friends for a beer, went to a BoDeans's concert, and son of a vondruke, if I didn't leave him at the concert hall."

by RCCook on Jul 28, 2007 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seconded
on Betemit. They seem adverse to using him, and I think he'd be great in our park. The biggest issue would be that he's a little similar to Blalock in that his primary role should be as a 3B vs RHP. But he can back up 2B and even SS, and he continues to evolve as a hitter, now into kind of a big power hitting IF with solid plate control and a so-so BA. Anyway, I like him and would try to get him thrown into a deal with them.

by Brett Perryman on Jul 28, 2007 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

first choice
would be the Dodgers.

but a close second would be the Dbacks.

both of those scenarios offer the magic ingredient that the other offers are missing - elite pitching.

Me and Billy the Kid never got along. I didn't like the way he cocked his hat and he wore his gun all wrong.

by tricer on Jul 29, 2007 1:41 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i would do the braves
if we do the braves i think we have a better posibillity of trading laird and beniot for pie AND still have wilson who could in the future either be our closer, relievr, or maybe even a starter. thats getting 2 starters this year who we know can play at this level. a lefty ground ball specialist who keeps that ball low which will be great for our ballpark(when was the last somebody said that) a shortstop who could be the next edgar renteria. and your giving up a guy who will be gone after 08. a catcher who would have been gone when teagrden was ready to play, and a reliever who we've been waiting for to pitch like this for years now, and  were benfiting from it and cashing in big, lets get it done JD
