Some non-Teixeira stuff

Okay, just a roundup of some things...

Sheehan, in his chat (linked in the earlier post), says he thinks Eric Gagne will be the best player dealt between now and the trade deadline.

Will Carroll says Gerald Laird is available, but the asking price is high, the result, he says, of the Rangers preferring to keep him.

I could see the Rangers going with something like Catalanotto at first base against righthanders next year, Saltalamacchia catching the majority of the time against righthanders, and then having Laird catch against lefties and Saltalamacchia play first base against them.  If you could put Saltalamacchia behind the plate for 90-100 games and at first base for 40, that would seem to allow you to maximize the return you are getting from those guys.

Kevin Goldstein has some love for Michael Main, although he didn't like the Rangers letting him DH.  But Goldstein thinks Main will be ready for full-season ball next year, which would slot him in Clinton.

You know, speaking of that...there could be a really impressive collection of arms in the two full-season A-ball clubs next year, with Main, Brigham, Feliz, and maybe Beavan in Clinton, while Phillips, Poveda, Kiker, and probably Tommy Hunter are in the Bakersfield rotation.

Buster Olney thinks the Yankees are the most likely destination for Gagne, although I'd have to think that the Yanks are going to have to get off of the whole "Alan Horne is untouchable" mindset.  I'd want more than just Horne for Gagne, anyway, and I wouldn't be surprised if Daniels is holding out for Ian Kennedy.  I'm not sure there's a package involving less than Kennedy that the Yanks could offer for Gagne that is that great.

I've been meaning to mention this, but keep forgetting with all the trade talk...but LSB has been nominated by Bugs and Cranks as one of the top baseball communities on the net.  You can vote for LSB (or one of the other nominees, if you'd like) by going here.  Sons of Sam Horn is the runaway leader right now, but maybe we can get LSB a little higher in the standings...

I've seen some suggestions that the Rangers should claim the recently DFA'd Morgan Ensberg.  I don't really see that that makes any sense...Hank Blalock is going to be back at some point in August, so Ensberg isn't going to have anywhere to play (unless you put him at first base, with the assumption that Saltalamacchia is catching regularly).

But even then, he's got a .256 EQA this season, his performance last year was the result of an unsustainably high walk rate, and his shoulder is supposedly shot, resulting in his power being way down.  And even if you think you could do something with him, he's arb-eligible after this season and can't be offered less than a 20% paycut, so you'd have to bring him back at more than $4 million, or else non-tender him and let him become a free agent.

I just don't see the point of that.

so i guess
any chance of us getting pie from the cubs is out of the question now?

I would do that trade
In fact I can't think of any reliever I wouldn't put in with Laird and trade for Pie, CJ would be the one that hurts the most but I can live with it (Sorry BGL)

Cubs GM..
.. has made odd moves in the past, but I don't seem him falling from something like Pie for Laird+Mahay (before he was traded).

I think Laird would be an excellent NL player with his ability to lay down bunts and hold runners.

I wouldn't trade CJ just yet, as I like the idea to try him as a SP.

by mattrpav on Jul 30, 2007 3:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

woudl you do that deal
pie could be very good...we dont have any really centerfielder...any thoughts

by weslyenkid01 on Jul 30, 2007 2:51 PM CDT   0 recs

Yes, I'd drive Gerald to the airport
there's no way Cubbies do that deal.

by FirebatM3 on Jul 30, 2007 2:53 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hmm
probably, maybe ask for a throw-in reliever.

I wonder
if the Salty for Snell rumour had any legs and if so I wonder if they'd do Laird+MaxRam for Snell.  Laird could be the placeholder C until MaxRam gets some seasoning and mash for them.  I'd rather have Snell than Pie, all things being equal.

However if it's Pie for Laird + _ would you all do CJ and Laird for Pie and a low-level prospect?

I personally wouldn't but a lot of people seem REALLY high on Pie...

According to SportingNews
"Saltalamacchia goes from sharing time at first base and being stuck behind catcher Brian McCann to getting major playing time in a hitters park in Texas. His owners should love this move. Even if he becomes a liability on defense, he still can be plugged in at DH."

So, a future DH huh.  That figures.

I'm kidn of excited
about having our middle infield in 3 or so years being Marcus Lemon and Andrus...

by HypoLuxa on Jul 30, 2007 2:59 PM CDT   0 recs

you don't think
ian kinsler will continue to put it together?

by Lonerangers on Jul 30, 2007 3:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ian
I'm still high on Ian, but I think in a few years he might be pushed to a COF spot.  If he keeps trying to mash every AB he just might turn into a COF who can hit like one...But truthfully, if Ian makes that move it will be to make room for German Duran, so really...I'm not quite sure how those guys are going to fit into the roster...great problem and all, but still a problem...

So I guess, I'll watch those two tear up Frisco at a very young age.  How's that for compromise?

by HypoLuxa on Jul 30, 2007 3:12 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Word
heck, I'm excited for them in Clinton.

Per the Newberg board
The Score in Chicago (radio, I think?) also is floating a rumor of Laird/Wilson for Pie.

I'd think it would take Salty to get Pie, if they want to deal him for a catcher.

Perhaps Laird and Wilson/Gagne.

I am so overfed on trade rumors...

by hightowersmith on Jul 30, 2007 3:20 PM CDT   0 recs

Cat
at first base is against righties would be a nightmare.

Laird + Benoit and/or Gagne for Pie would make that nightmare more tolerable.

by fsujon on Jul 30, 2007 3:22 PM CDT   0 recs

I'd much rather see a
Laird/Beniot trade than Laird/CJ but I'm sure the Cubs are thinking the same thing.

Agreed.
Adam, usually I agree with what you say, but I don't agree with your proposed situation next year. I wouldn't want to bounce salty back and forth defensively on his first full time season. And I think we can deal laird now and package him with a reliever and get a better return than a platoon catcher.

i would do
laird with either beniot or gagne... i would hate to see cj leave...but the cubs would be getting a guy perfect for the guy in the N.L. and gagne who has been dominant this year...that could psuh them ahead of the brewers if they keep sucking like they have been, i really like pie and really liked him when i saw him play here when the cubs were in town

by weslyenkid01 on Jul 30, 2007 3:47 PM CDT   0 recs

I might even
consider kicking in a low level prospect if laird and gagne/benoit can't quite get it done.

if we dont get pie
you saw what the padres got for scott linebrink, if we trade gagne we should be able to get something pretty good for him

by weslyenkid01 on Jul 30, 2007 4:00 PM CDT   0 recs

Pie
Maybe we can get cake if we can't get pie...

And if we do get him
July 30, 2007 will go down in history as the day JD gave Ranger fans Salty Elvis Pie.

Pie
would be a steal, wouldn't he?  I mean we'd be giving them a LOT of value, but wasn't Pie rated extremely high, and do we NOT need a legit outfield prospect/player?

where exactly was Pie rated among overall prospects before he came up?  what are his skills?

Pie
Pie is a top 100 prospect and has been the Cubs top prospect for a couple of years. He is very highly ranked.

by uthornfan on Jul 30, 2007 4:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

#49
To be exact, he was ranked #49 by Baseball America.

Per Yahoo's Tim brown
the braves are interested in Bronson Arroyo. I really like what the braves are doing. I mean if you are going to go for it, you should just all out go for it. For the first time in a long time I find myself rooting for the braves (in spite of TBS)

Dotel
The other rumor is that they are giving up Davies for Dotel. The people on their site are upset because they wanted Gagne.

by uthornfan on Jul 30, 2007 5:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah I heard that one
I should have mentioned it, because I've heard its so close, its as good as done. When you add two quality guys and are discussing a third, you really send a message to fans and current players. And you can't say that JS knows which prospects to keep and which ones to hold on to since he would be gutting his whole system.
