Tuesday morning things

Today is the first day for the Rangers A.T., and it is a much different landscape.  And with 5 1/2 hours to go until the trade deadline this afternoon, there could be some more significant changes coming.  Things are sort of in flux right now, I think...

Jim Reeves carps about Tom Hicks not paying the money to keep Mark Teixeira, and seems bent out of shape that there isn't more uproar about Hicks not opening his wallet to keep Teixeira, with the merits of the trade being secondary in his discussion.

His lamenting that the Rangers let every good homegrown player walk, though, seems to ignore the Michael Young extension.  I've got issues with Tom Hicks' payroll, but to rip him for trading Teixeira instead of trying to re-sign him ignores the realities of what Teixeira wants, what he's expecting to get in free agency, and what he's likely to produce for that money.

Anthony Andro says that Eric Gagne is still a hot commodity, but there's no interest in Sammy Sosa, while the interest that was out there in Brad Wilkerson has faded.

Bill Stoneman says the price for Teixeira was just too high, which is why the Angels ended up missing out on Teixeira.

The Boston Herald says that the BoSox have made a "substantial offer" to the Rangers for Eric Gagne, although Gagne can block a deal to the Red Sox.  There's also a question of what a "substantial offer" really is...while I'd consider Jon Lester and Brandon Moss substantial, the Herald might consider Wily Mo Pena and Devern Hansack substantial.

There are a bunch of other stories out there on Gagne, but they boil down to there being four finalists -- the Mets, the Yankees, the BoSox, and the Brewers -- and it isn't real clear what team, if any, really has the edge or is willing to pay the price Daniels wants to part with Gagne.

No kidding...
I'd love to have Lester, but I don't think the BoSox are going to part with him.  I think Gabbard is a real possibility though, and he has shown occasional signs of having something.

I'd have loved to have kept Teixeira
and would have paid him 6/120.  However, thats probably not enough to keep him from Free Agency, and I wouldn't be interested in paying more, so I think you end up doing what JD did.  Cut the best possible deal, hope you get some young core team members, and move on.

Holdsies on the Wilkerson subject.
According to Gotham Baseball Magazine, the Mets are talking to the Rangers about Wilkerson, not Gagne.

Doesn't seem right that the Rangers would say that they could get Milledge. I'm sure, like Sosa, they'd take anything for him and his salary.

Milledge
You didn't read that closely enough, it doesn't say a Rangers scout, it just says a scout, team unknown.  No one in the Rangers organization is stupid enough to think they could get Milledge for Wilkerson.  I don't think they could even get Milledge for Gagne plus Wilkerson plus a ton of cash.

I suppose you're right
Thanks for the criticism, then, I suppose. I realize that no one is stupid enough to think that a trade of that magnitude would actually happen.

I guess no props on reporting the story on LSB first, then?

Boras
I like Tex.  I wish him well.

But, Boras needs a serious incident to happen to one of his clients.  Like, Tex has a potentially career ending knee injury next August and loses a ton of money because Boras talked him into not signing a K.

I feel like Boras has convinced his clients that just because it is better for Boras to not sign extensions that it is therefore better for the client as well.

Considering the injury risk associated with professional sports, if I could get a guaranteed, long-term K for a lot of money, I'd jump all over it.  Granted I could make more money if I waited until free agency, but unless I felt it was going to be at least 1/3 greater than the extension offered, I don't think it's worth the risk.

I have no idea what the Rangers offered, I'm just saying, theoretically, I wouldn't agree with Boras about always going to free agency if I was his client.

That actually happened
Boras advised Millwood to test the market and then he got injured.  Millwood took an incentive laden one year deal with Cleveland to prove he was healthy.  One year later he signs with Texas for more money then the Phillies and Braves offered him.

Sammy...
Doesn't look like anyone is going to take him....What are the chances we waive him and bring up Botts?  Seriously, this is getting stupid.  This would be the best trade-deadline deal JD has ever done.

botts is coming up no matter what happens
with sosa.

dont worry about it.

if hes traded hes gone, if hes released hes gone, if hes here hes not getting full playing time.  best option is him getting traded but if it doesnt happen it doesnt mean botts isnt coming up.

Tim Brown of Yahoo
says the Indians might part with Cliff Lee.  I would be willing to take a flyer on him right now if the Rangers could get him.

and who would we give in return?
Sammy Sosa? I don't think the Indians need any more of our outfielders. Certainly don't need a DH.

I don't think we're buying right now, anyway.

Buyers or Sellers
I see us taking more of a Tigers approach to rebuilding than a Royals/Pirates/Nats approach.  As Hindman pointed out in his diary we are going to have loads of money to spend in the offseason, and I would expect us to dole out some Pudge/Mags type contracts to "buy time" until all the guys we have down in A ball are ready to help.  It took the Tigers several seasons but I think we compare much more to them than others.  Therefore if you have spare money and can buy low an a potentially solid starter like Lee, I think it is something to consider.

Stoneman
if the Angels do nothing in the playoffs because they don't score enough runs, Stoneman's head should be on the block.  Doing nothing is an annual event for him, and though it is sometimes the smart thing to do, he may have missed a big opportunity this year to strengthen his team and excite his fans.
