Around SBN: BTB's Final Preseason NCAA Hoops Bracket

Wednesday morning stuff

So starts a new era in Rangers baseball.

Was out socializing last night, and didn't see the game, but 1 run from Brandon McCarthy in 6+ innings I'll take, even if the Ks and walks weren't where you'd like him.  And he's dangerously close to seeing his ERA drop below 5.00 for the season.

Evan Grant writes that Jarrod Saltalamacchia will be catching a couple of days per week and also playing first base, with Adam Melhuse serving as the emergency catcher and also playing first base and third base.

Grant also says that Jon Daniels is heading to Cleveland today to personally discuss the Sammy Sosa situation, apparently with Ron Washington and Sosa.

If the Rangers are going to call up Jason Botts, it puts them in a bit of a tight spot, as far as the roster goes, if (as Tom Hicks said yesterday) Sosa isn't going to be released, because you've got two guys, in Botts and Sosa, who aren't going to play in the field, and another guy, in Melhuse, who is almost never going to play.

But given that Daniels is going up to Cleveland to talk about the Jason Botts situation, I'm guessing Botts is coming up today or tomorrow, and Sosa's playing time will be dropping dramatically.

Grant also has a piece up on the attempts by the team to extend Teixeira:

Hicks said he met with Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras, two weeks ago when the club was in Anaheim and extended a formal offer within 48 hours of the meeting. The reply: Teixeira wasn't prepared to make a long-term commitment.

Only a week before the meeting, Teixeira said the Rangers had never approached him about an extension. He reiterated that stance after the club left Anaheim and traveled to Oakland. A Rangers source, however, said the club had made "overtures" to Teixeira on at least three occasions.

As Teixeira hastily checked out of the Rangers' Cleveland hotel to catch a flight to Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon, he declined to comment on anything Rangers related. Asked if an extension proposal had ever been brought up to him, Teixeira said, "I'm not talking about any of that. I'm an Atlanta Brave. That's done. I'm very happy. That's it."

Ken Rosenthal trashed Hicks for going public with this:

First off, owner Tom Hicks needs to shut up.

Hicks can spout off about offering Teixeira about $140 million for eight years, but it was an offer Teixeira was certain to refuse. Everyone in baseball knows that Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras, prefers his clients to determine their values on the open market. Heck, Hicks should know it better than anyone, having signed many a Boras client, including a certain $252-million bauble way back when.

Maybe, in the abstract, Rosenthal is right.

But given that Tom Hicks has been ripped by just about everyone in D/FW (including me, on numerous occasions) for being a tightwad, given that there was a column just yesterday by Jim Reeves taking Hicks to the woodshed for refusing to pony up and pay Teixeira, I don't blame him for going public with the contract offer.

And if, in fact, the response was that he wasn't interested in making a long-term commitment, I think that tells you all you need to know about the Rangers' chances of keeping Mark Teixeira around.  He didn't want to be here.  And since I rip Hicks when I think he's being cheap, I will commend him for making what I think is a very legitimate offer, and one that I think would have at least gotten the parties to the table and gotten a deal done if Teixeira wanted to be a Ranger for the next 8 years.

Gil LeBreton is particularly harsh in regards to Teixeira and Boras:

It's become trite to say that Hicks needs to loosen his wallet and spend what it takes to keep the Rangers intact. If Teixeira was truly worth the 10-year, $200-plus million contract that he apparently wants, the Rangers wouldn't have finished in third and fourth place in every season that he was with the club.

Talk about bluffing. Teixeira was hailed by some local sheep for "telling like it is" about Hicks. He chastised the franchise for operating "like a small-market club."

That "small-market" team offered him $140 million -- $60 million more than Michael Young -- to remain a Ranger. But Mark Teixeira said no way.

So who was misleading who here?

In the American League, he was a one-time All-Star. In the National League, good luck. Teixeira isn't as good as first basemen Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder, Derek Lee, Lance Berkman or even Carlos Delgado.

Jarrod vs Laird
I know you've mentioned before, Adam, but yeah I think Laird gets dealt this winter.

He's still just 27, he's got value and ML experience, there are some signs he doesn't get along great with Wash, and everyone's howling for Jarrod to catch in order to really pay off.

It's a break-in period for Saltalamacchia as much as for Botts and Cruz.

Laird in the NL
He'd be a great NL catcher.. his ability to bunt for hits and sacrifice is very valuable out of a catcher.

by mattrpav on Aug 1, 2007 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

NL
Laird is also an excellent defensive catcher.  Considering how much more important stealing bases is in the NL, his arm will be more important there too.

If he's a good fit in the NL
then which team would need him next season?

What would come in a return for him?

D'Rays, Marlins
a couple more teams that might have some interest in Laird.

Both those teams have potential 1B that they could flip back in Johnny Gomes and Mike Jacobs.  I wouldn't mind flipping Laird + for one of those guys to play first base for us next season.

Me and Billy the Kid never got along. I didn't like the way he cocked his hat and he wore his gun all wrong.

the question you have to ask yourself...
Is larid+Salty better or worse than Salty+whoever we get to play 1st base.

If they are just going to stick Wilkerson there, I might rather hang on to Laird for another year.

Tex in the NL
I disagree that Lance Berkman and Carlos Delgado are better.. but considering Tex only made one All-Star game is indicative that he is not very consistent start to finish.

Not that it matters at all
but Teix might have had more than one AS appearence if the break was after the season instead of midway through the year.  The NL does have a better collection of 1B than the AL though.

Berkman
Berkman is a considerably better hitter than Teix.

Berkman eqa's:

  1. .331
  2. .320
  3. .311
  4. .335
  5. .317
  6. .334
2007 (so far): .287

Teix eqa:

  1. .263
  2. .292
  3. .309
  4. .287
  5. .306
Berkman has been a better hitter (and for longer) than Teix.  In fact, before this season, Teix's BEST season ('05) was worse than Berkman's WORST season ('03).

Teixeira
He's been a middle-tier first baseman offensively over the last few years.  Yes he's been very good, and our best hitter, but that position is the strongest in baseball at the moment.

That is what is so dumbfounding about his "value" right now.  I am baffled that the Braves gave up so much for him, when there are probably ten other first basemen I'd prefer to have over Teixeira.

Honestly, I think him rejecting that 8yr/140 million offer is the best thing that could happen to the Rangers.  We got 5 legit prospects, and frankly... he's just not that good... Its not wasted money, but we're not talking ARod or Pujols here.

Like I think someone said - you put too much on the table for one guy for that long, you end up with a Todd Helton type situation where everyone completely resents their "francise player"

Teixiera
I am kind of with LeBreton on this.  While I don't think Tex can be blamed entirely for the Rangers' poor results while he was there, I also don't think he can be entirely excused.  He was often a slow starter and he is not the type of hitter who improves an entire lineup a la Bonds in the day, Pujols, ARod et al(which is how he expects to be paid).  I am sad that the player is gone but I won't miss the person one bit.  I think it is best he is in a situation where there are other clubhouse leaders and he can just play first and cash his checks b/c I think that is really all he is interested in doing.

by pblack on Aug 1, 2007 10:23 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

you can't blame the teams' woes
on Tex at all.  That doesn't make any sense to blame the woes of a team on one position player.  I do think the offer was a little low but I've said before that I Think Tex's best seasons are ahead of him so I could see how some might think it's a legit offer if you thought he wasn't getting any better.

LeBreton obviously thinks Tex has hit is peak if he thinks he can't beat out Delgado and Berkman.

Game Last Night
Anyone think that they are trying to strech out CJ so he can get a few starts before the end of the year?  I know that with Hafner coming up in the 9th it made sense to stick with the lefty, but the decision to leave him in for more than one inning could have been two fold.  It helped them win the game and it served the purpose of stretching him out for a future rotation shot.

Hicks actually made an offer?
Well that's nice to hear, if true. I'm impressed.

With the way salaries are expoloding, not sure how reasonable an offer 8/140 really is, though.

by Sharky on Aug 1, 2007 10:44 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Although
The way the articles are written, it's difficult to say. Tex says there wasn't an offer apparantly, and I'd tend to believe that, as the Rangers tend to give players the cold shoulder (Pudge, Rogers, etc).

Might have been just a case of Hicks throwing a lowball offer at a guy he was about to trade just on the odd chance he might accept it.

Regardless, Hicks has angered many more fans by letting yet another top notch Ranger go. And attendence is low as is, after years of defections.

Is it inconceivable Teixeira never heard about that offer?

I know that's borderline conspiracy theory, but I'm sure Boras and Teixeira explicity agreed to go to free agency at some point.

Section by Section
Grant Section: Why is Melhuse still here?  Laird has done everything asked of him.  He kept his mouth shut all last year while splitting time with Ol'Popup.  He has focused on his game calling.  He has laid down perfect bunts all year and leads the AL by throwing out 40% of the steal attempts.  Sure his offensive numbers are down, but according to his boss, R. Washington, that is because Laird is doing what was asked of him.  Laird can play some first base or in the outfield.  I just don't think Laird should lose at bats because he has worked so hard at catching a good game (according to Ron Washington).

Rosenthal: Maybe if Rosenthal and others would shut up about the way Hicks spends his money then Hicks would shut up as well.  This is a problem I see in our culture.  It is always the guy that is trying to defend himself that get rips to shreds for opening his mouth.  The media should comment on how Hicks spends the teams money, but Hicks should be able to defend his actions without being told to shut up.  If Teixeira had not falsely accused the Rangers of not trying to resign him then I doubt Hicks would have ever said something.  If the offer was so ridiculous, then Teixeira would have said, "Yeah they made me an offer, but it was only 140 mil for 8 years.  That's not even close, so I ended negotiations."  He didn't, however, because he would have looked like an ass (pardon the language).  So he told a bold face lie.  Hicks called him out on it, after he was traded.

LeBreton Section:  I think he is right on except for one thing.  This statement, "Teixeira isn't as good as first basemen Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder, Derek Lee, Lance Berkman or even Carlos Delgado," ignores two important details.  First off it ignores the defensive skills of the players.  Defensive only, I would put Teixeira at the top of the list.  The other detail that he has ignored is the difference in pitching between the two leagues.  I couldn't find current interleague statistics (I would love a link if you got one), but I think Teixeira could rank higher than all of those guys except Pujols given a full season against the weak national league pitching.  As for overall, I would put Teixeira in the second or third spot on this list.

interleague
career interleague numbers for Tex:
.265/.341/.568

but almost 1/3 of those games are against Houston:
.309/.387/.638

probably not all that important considering that it's about 50 ABs a year against unfamiliar pitchers.

Just curious...
How many others in the Ranger system have Boras as a rep?  Anyone know how to find this out?

by Hove on Aug 1, 2007 3:08 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Warning
Howdy.

Don't forget how the last big name Boras client treated the Astros - Carlos Beltran.

It's fairly obvious by now that Teixeira didn't intend to call Arlington his permanent home.  All he would have done is used them for leverage against a Brand Name club back east after the arbitration deadline, thus torpedoing Texas's chances to even pick up some quality draft picks out of it.

Just like Carlos Beltran did.
