A bunch of stuff

Richard Durrett says that Salts McGee will be at first base tonight.  And according to a poster over at Newberg's, Randy Galloway says Salts and Jason Botts will both be in the lineup tonight, which might just make me weep with joy.

Of course, my joy is tempered by the fact that Jamey Wright is sticking around, in a bullpen role.  I can't imagine he'll be here more than a week or so, though, while the Rangers see if anyone puts in a claim on him when they run him through waivers.  Kason Gabbard gets Wright's spot in the rotation tomorrow.

Jim Callis's chat at ESPN today had a ton of Ranger stuff...says the Gagne deal was a win/win, and that the Braves gave up a lot for Teixeira, but that Schuerholz generally knows who to give up and who to keep.

Callis also likes Neftali better than Fabio Castillo, and says that he's being bombarded with Yankee fans who are convinced that there's some conspiracy that resulted in Jon Daniels sending Gagne to the BoSox (the two scenarios I specifically saw were that Daniels screwed the Yanks on Gagne because he grew up a Mets fan, and to pay back the Yanks for their imminent extension of ARod).  Callis (like most others) says that the Yanks didn't get Gagne because they refused to part with any prospects who had a chance of someday being good.

Patrick DiCaprio writes about the Rangers' deadline deals, and gets bonus karma points from me for linking me in his discussion and for having a cool picture at the top of his blog.

Christina Kahrl is one of the few at BP who noticed who the key piece of the Gagne trade is:

For the Red Sox, this might seem a deliciously low price to pay to get Gagne, with the added benefit that it ended up leaving the Bronx Bombers a bit flat-footed, so you can forgive them some amount of self-delighted glee. Gabbard and Murphy were both essentially filler players for the Sox (of admittedly differing degrees), and the only trailing leg, far-distant shoe that has to drop to properly assess the full price paid will be how well Beltre pans out. That's why the Rangers made this deal, certainly, and why they could settle for a back-end rotation regular and a fourth outfielder as the rest of the package for Gagne.

Keith Law says teams are now erring on the side of over-valuing draft picks in deciding whether to trade players or hang onto them at the deadline.  I think that's particularly true when you consider that a quality draft pick is going to cost you over a million dollars, while the bonus for the player you get back has already been paid...

And is Doug Melvin panicking?  Rickie Weeks has been sent back to AAA...

free agency
I guess a shallow pool for the trade season generally means a deeper free agent class - which means we could add some quality vets for much less than we could have expected...?

Except
this next year's free agency pool looks fairly thin.  It looks like it will be one of those years to sign a lot of one year filler contracts for holes.

Who for CF
in '09?

by Longhorn on Aug 1, 2007 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Well...
Perhaps Cameron, if you get him on a 2 year deal.

If Brandon Boggs hits well in AAA next year, he's an option.

Joaquin Arias could end up being an option.

Or a Byrd/Murphy platoon.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 1, 2007 4:29 PM CDT up reply actions

what is up......
with talk about arias to CF? Just seems retarded to me. I realize Young is at SS and Kinsler at 2B but it just seems like we would be best suited to keep him at SS, which im assuming is where his value is considering his defense is his best quality and then use him as a trade chip. Thoughts?

by erikj07 on Aug 1, 2007 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah
I'd trade his ass if we can get a taker...but you have to build his demand back up since he's been out injured all year.  any progress on him?
"No, Donny, these men are nihilists, there's nothing to be afraid of."

by Walter Sobchak on Aug 1, 2007 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed...
i think you misunderstood my point. I dont think we should trade him at this point bc his value is as low as ever. I just think its stupid for us to try and move him to CF when his value is as a plus defensive shortstop

by erikj07 on Aug 1, 2007 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

nah
I didn't misunderstand you...I was simply stating the obvious.  my bad.

has Arias played at all this year? What is up with him

by erikj07 on Aug 1, 2007 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Just something to consider long term
IIRC, Evan Grant mentioned at the DMN blog that it wouldn't surprise him to see Elvis switched to CF soon.  FWIW

i don't understand
why we would do that at all.

by erikj07 on Aug 1, 2007 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Somebody oughta ask Grant
... to elaborate on that HSO during his next chat.

by shroomer on Aug 1, 2007 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Stupid
That may be the dumbest thing I have ever read. If he comes anywhere close to being the gold glove shortstop he projects to be, he would be a hell of a lot better than Michael Young defensively. I know we made our singles hitting, defensive liability a very rich man last offseason, but there is no way we should move a High A shortstop to center field just because Young is currently on the roster. Andrus is still two years away at the least, why move him now? actually, why move him ever? If he turns into a great defender, a simple move of Young to second base and Andrus to shortstop would go a long way to really improving our defense.

Okay - OF not CF, my bad
I finally figured out how to search the blog archives there - from July 29th post evaluating the prospective trade matchups ...

Braves: Maybe this is most realistic deal, but I'm wary. If Jarrod Saltalamacchia is the super prospect he's touted to be, why is Julio Franco playing in front of him. I've also received an email stating that Matt Harrison is bothered by a left arm problem, but I can't confirm that right now. Unless the Rangers intend to convert Elvis Andrus to an outfielder, he's not a matchup that does much for me. I've also heard that if the Rangers don't include C.J. Wilson in this deal (which they won't), the names below Saltalamacchia could change. I'm mixed on this deal.

Still doesn't make sense
At least that was just Grant speculating. I thought you were saying Grant said the Rangers planned on moving him to the OF.

For a beat writer who is supposed to know baseball to say something no ignorant just doesn't make sense. Why take a potential gold glove shortstop and take away all his value by making him an outfielder? Especially when your current middle infield consists of one below average second baseman and one average at best shortstop? If Andrus never becomes a gold glove shortstop it would be different, but if you move him to the OF right now he has no chance of ever becoming great at shortstop.

I'd love Cameron
on a one year contract.  I can't possibly see going 3 years with him. I'd rather not go 2, but I might consider it.

I like the thought of signing guys to one year contracts, and have the possibility of flipping them to keep strengthening our farm.

by DJCahill on Aug 1, 2007 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions

right on
I'd go 1 year on Cameron if we don't go Torii...but unlike most of you I still want to see Torii sign here for 5 years...put him in CF for 2 then move him to a corner outfield spot, where his "declining" defense would still be above average.

Plus I bet the guy can rake pretty well playing half his games here - career .300 hitter here with a 25 HR, 100 RBI and 80 run pace

"No, Donny, these men are nihilists, there's nothing to be afraid of."

by Walter Sobchak on Aug 1, 2007 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions

The only caution on Cameron
is his OBP this year has dropped close to stinko territory.  His BA has never been good, but normally with walks it was adequate.

I definitely would not offer him 2 years.  1 year, low base with incentives.  If thats not enough to get it done, it might not get done.

i agree
cameron seems like a guy going downhill to me, i'd be fine with 1yr for him but no more

fwiw...
That home park kills him.  He has pretty solid road stats.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 1, 2007 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Hunter
The problem is, his offense will be below average for a corner outfield slot.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 1, 2007 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

below average
in year 5 of his 5-year contract, or in year 3?  at what point do you see him falling, seeing as how he's having one of his best (if not his best) year right now?

also, how do you compare his "below average" offense to what the best Ranger outfielder is doing this year...I can see "below average" being Kenny Lofton-like, and I'll take that in years 4 and 5

"No, Donny, these men are nihilists, there's nothing to be afraid of."

by Walter Sobchak on Aug 2, 2007 11:09 AM CDT up reply actions

Hunter
The main problem with him offensively is that he doesn't get BBs. Even with his "best" year that he is currently having, he has a mediocre .332 OBP (thats lower than Johnny Damon (.353) this year). So once Hunter's BA and power numbers start to regress back to his career averages, he'll be an OK player making big-time money.

OT, but
that Chris Young dude in AZ looks and performs like a near clone of Cameron.

It is really unbelievable how similar they are.

TOUGH LUCK...
...for Jamey.

i feel bad for the guy.  he's had a tough year... with his injury... and then trying to get his spot in the rotation back... he hasn't been great, but, he's kept us in some ballgames... notably his start against the Red Sox a few weeks ago where he pitched out of some jams.

but obviously... it seems we're going a different direction.

hopefully things will work their way out...

I was thinking about my favorite NL team
I've always liked the Astros considering Houston is not far and I've been to more Astros games than any other NL team.

But, with JD getting rid of Chris Young I've sorta been following the Padres.

Now with Tex being with the Braves I'm having a hard time in picking my favorite NL team. Cause I've followed Teixeira longer than I have Chris Young and Adrain Gonzalez. Hell, not to mention Travis Hafner. But, Chris Young, Agon, John Danks and Mark Teixeira were some of my favorite players.

So, I've decided that the Padres are my favorite NL team.
