Rangers expect to sign Beavan, Ramirez

T.R. Sullivan reports that the Rangers anticipate announcing deals with Neil Ramirez and Blake Beavan tomorrow.

He also says that Julio Borbon is expected to sign, but things with Borbon apparently aren't as far along as with the two pitchers.  Negotiations are apparently also ongoing with John Gast, the Rangers' fifth rounder who was considered a potential first rounder until he had to undergo T-J surgery.

Update [2007-8-14 23:10:10 by Adam J. Morris]: -- Josh and Tom just said it is official, and an agreement has been reached with Beavan.

He might not pitch again this year?

Ok, why the hell is the deadline 10:59 instead of 11:00?

3 weeks for Spokane

nah, probably not

Doubtful
If he followed the same pattern as Reed, Hunter and Main, he would throw bullpens for 10-14 days before throwing in a game. There are only two weeks left in the minor league seasons, so my guess is he makes his debut in instructional league.

Gast
I would be extremely happy if we got him signed. We just had one helluva draft...nice job JD and co.

Where can I find a list
of players that have signed? I want to know what's up with guys like Ocampo and Ranaudo, or are those guys going to college?

It obviously isn't updated with Beavan yet, but the rest of it should be accurate.

I've been looking all day to try and find a list like this.  I'd been wanting to know if Jake Arrieta had signed yet.

by hurley325 on Aug 14, 2007 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Arrieta
I can't imagine he will sign. With Boras as his agent, he will be asking for first round money, which is where he was projected to be picked before he had an awful spring. I doubt he gets that type of money.

by uthornfan on Aug 14, 2007 11:24 PM CDT up reply actions

That is kind of my thinking
It would be really nice to see him back in Fort Worth next year for his senior season.

But also, the O's didn't have a pick in the 2nd or 3rd rounds, so they could have some extra money to give him.  Although, that money will probably go toward Matt Wieters.

You guys don't care
However, as a college coach, this new deadline really sucks for college baseball.  Now, more guys are going to wait until right until the deadline to sign.

With the scholarship situation the way it is, you need to get the most out of your money.  Imagine if you've got your top junior pitcher and your best incoming freshman pitcher waiting until the deadline to sign.

Then, they both sign and your left with a crapload of money on the table and its too late to get anybody else.

by badradiorules on Aug 14, 2007 10:16 PM CDT reply actions

I thought it would be easier for coaches
because they would know for certain who would be on their staff sooner rather than wait until classes begin.

Am I missing something???

O'Campo
Did Tom just say we signed O'Campo? I missed the first part of what he said, but he gave his stats. I don't know why he would have brought him up if we hadn't signed him.

O'Campo report from Baseball America
22. Kyle O'Campo, rhp (National rank: 123)
School: Poly HS, Riverside, Calif. Class: Sr.
B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 175. Birthdate: 4/9/88.
Scouting Report: O'Campo is part of Cal State Fullerton's recruiting class, and like infielder Christian Colon, he could slip through to the Titans if his expectations and the draft reality don't match up. O'Campo's resume was impressive entering the spring, with the Aflac Classic and Area Code Games among his appearances. He has a quick arm and projectable 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame, and his velocity is as good or better than any prep pitcher in Southern California. He has touched 94 mph in the past and regularly pitches in the 88-91 mph range. He throws both a slider and a curveball, and scouts like the slider a bit better at present, as he's shown a feel for throwing it for strikes or burying it out of the zone. O'Campo's mechanics don't engender confidence, either that he'll throw consistent strikes with his fastball or add velocity despite his frame. He has a head snap that caused him to struggle to find a consistent release point. If his delivery can't be smoothed out, O'Campo might end up as a set-up man down the line.

Another take from Perfect Game
From Perfect Game:

Kyle O'Campo is a 2007 RHP from Riverside Poly HS, residing in Corona, CA, with a 6'3" 185 lb. frame. Ranked #26 among PG National Top 100 pitchers. Body - lean, lanky, and wiry, projectable. Pitching - over the top slot, very quick loose arm, deep extension backside, cranks it up, free and easy delivery, FB very lively at plate, good late life, plus spin on breaking ball, ranged CB velocity, all appeared to be CBs, threw some very hard, good down bite, shape stayed pretty consistent, good feel of CU, good fade action. Early draft potential.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 14, 2007 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions

So
any word on Drew Pomeranz or Anthony Ranuado? If we can sign another, plus John Gast and Neil Ramirez, it'd be one heck of a draft for young pitching.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 14, 2007 10:37 PM CDT reply actions

I know Borbon is supposed to sign,
but what happens to him if he doesn't?, does he play for the Ft. Worth Cats or something?

by sprite on Aug 14, 2007 10:48 PM CDT reply actions

Goes back to
Tennessee for his senior year.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 14, 2007 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh,
i thought it was like the NBA,once you sign with an agent you can't go back, guess not. Thanks.

by sprite on Aug 14, 2007 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions

It is, sort of
Once you sign with an agent you can't go back to school. At least that is the rule. However, Boras is not technically Borbon's agent, he is his advisor. That means he can go back to school. While there is no difference in an agent and an advisor, the way the rules are written make it possible for him to return to Tenn.

by uthornfan on Aug 14, 2007 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Well,
that's a pretty big loop hole, thanks for clarifying.

by sprite on Aug 14, 2007 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah
I am not sure what the official difference is between an advisor and an agent. No one, to the best of my knowledge, has ever been prevented from returning to school due to having an agent. I think they are just two terms for the same thing.

Signing bonus
I looked up last year's #17 pick, Matt Antonelli, and he signed for $1.575 million. So it looks like Beavan signed for slot money, if not slightly below.
"Then I met some friends for a beer, went to a BoDeans's concert, and son of a vondruke, if I didn't leave him at the concert hall."

by RCCook on Aug 14, 2007 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Slot
This years slot was about 1.4 million for Beavan's position. He signed for right about 2006 slot value.

by uthornfan on Aug 14, 2007 11:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Ah
I was thinking slot would be slightly higher than that.
"Then I met some friends for a beer, went to a BoDeans's concert, and son of a vondruke, if I didn't leave him at the concert hall."

by RCCook on Aug 14, 2007 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Slots
Baseball reduced the slots by 10% this year, which is one of the reasons for all of the hold outs. It seems quite a few of the players that signed for over slot this year just held out signed for the 2006 slot.

now...
we need to get ramirez and borbon... i know ramirez wont get any starts because its to late, but what about borbon, when he signs tomorrow where will he go?

Spokane
If he signs a 2007 contract, my guess is he goes to Spokane.

by uthornfan on Aug 14, 2007 11:28 PM CDT up reply actions

so no shot
of seeing what he can do this year

by weslyenkid01 on Aug 14, 2007 11:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Why not?
Seems to me a lot of position players hit the field a day or two after signing...

Am I wrong, or is this something where you know this specific guy won't play this year?

by thedirkatron on Aug 14, 2007 11:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know anything specific
But why in the world would you rush him in on a 2007 contract when you would only get maybe two weeks, tops, out of him? Just sign him to an '08 deal, as long as that doesn't affect instructional league.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 15, 2007 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Why do that?
I thought under the new CBA it doesn't matter if you sign an '07 or an '08 deal... you have to go on the 40 at the same time.

Is ther another reason to sign him to an '08 deal? I thought the extra year before he becomes rule-5 eligible was the only reason to sign a guy to a "next year" contract.

I may be wrong, though.

I just don't see it
I can't think of cases where position players signed and rushed to play the last eight or so games. I'll have to look and see, maybe some have.

Would be cool to see him in a couple of games though.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 15, 2007 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Has it crossed your mind ...
... considering the beating his skillz took by Rangers fans upon being drafted, that it might be better to NOT sign him and get another pick next summer?

by shroomer on Aug 15, 2007 12:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Sure
This is all kind of based on the assumption that he does sign.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 15, 2007 12:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Considering the haul of talent
they got in the trades along with the rest of the draft I'd be ok with that.  Especially if they only picked him because they thought he was the right pick at that spot instead of because they really believed he would develop into a major league talent.

Also
this is barely related, but it's going to be interesting to see how BA handles all of these guys not playing in their top 100. It's one thing to try to rate a David Price based on his college play, but how in the world would you rank a Vitters or Moustakas or any one of several HS pitchers who were high picks but didn't pitch? Seems even harder than placing Maybin a couple of years ago and you have to multiply it by, I don't know, six or eight?

Maybe we'll see fewer new draftees on there than usual.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 15, 2007 12:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Great Job Rangers!
So they signed him for barely above slot.  I guess they knew like the rest of us that Navarro was simply a ploy because it wouldn't have helped him at all.

Sweet
We signed Captain Wonderful for less than 1.5mm.

Wouldn't have thought that would be possible given the way he was talking himself up.
