Botts
I'd like to see more of him since he has been hot lately.

by brentash on Sep 12, 2007 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

agree...
...i've been one of bottsy's biggest critics... but i agree... he's been swinging a good bat lately...

problem is... there's no where to put him...

i think Hank gives you a better chance to win hitting DH... and Cat's already got left covered... and he hits righties better...

by oc on Sep 12, 2007 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

but...
....isn't it more important to evaluate Botts at this point than it is Catalanotto.

And Byrd's been playing everyday. He could sit every third or fourth game and let Murphy play CF and Botts COF.

by Brian Hayes on Sep 12, 2007 6:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep...
I'd put Cat at 1B, Salty at CA, Botts in LF.

Edinson Volquez
goes up against a Cy Young award candidate for the 3rd time in a row.  He won the first two, lets see if he can finish the sweep.

A-Rod yes
Manny...I would put Vlad ahead of him.

by slc ranger on Sep 12, 2007 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Meh
maybe it's because of the lineup Vlad hits in, but for a team not named the Rangers, I'd still think Manny has more of the "oh shit" factor.

by FirebatM3 on Sep 12, 2007 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hear ya.....
but I will still go with Vlad because there is no one else in that lineup that scares you...Manny has Papi (if healty). Agree to disagree but you don't want to see either one with the game on the line.

Yahoo can't spell Volquez's name
They spell it "Edison." That irritates me. Respect Edinson, beeeotches.

Volquez keeps throwing strikes.  You've got to love it.

this game may already be over unless the Rangers can get to the Tiger pen.

Not really
his FB isn't really all there. We're justing swinging at too many pitches right now.

by FirebatM3 on Sep 12, 2007 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Didn't watch the game
but I did see Verlander strike out Kinsler with a 96 MPH heater on sportscenter. Is that his typical stuff? If not, what does he usually sit at, 98?

Verlander
When I have seen him he is usually 94-97, but he routinely hits 98 and 99 when he needs to. Early in tonights game he was in the low 90s but by the mid innings he was really bringing it.

a foot from a tie game
murphy......like gmj and Derosa last year, you just keep waiting for him to stop hitting, but he just keeps it going

We gotta rally and get Eddy this win
how big of a confidence boost would it be? he gives up 2 in the first and shut them out for the rest of the game to defeat a potential CY Young winner.......that would be a hell of a first 3 games for Volquez

Volquez lookin right...
Lots of first pitch strikes, challenging guys...Really flawless except the Sheffield AB...

How deep was Hank's fly ball?
I'm on MLB gametracker and it looks like it should've been deep enough for Young to score.

by Inkara1 on Sep 12, 2007 7:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

it was a shallow fly ball
no way Young could have tagged up.

Especially with Laid coming up next

Let's just sit him
while he has any trace of trade value. Then, this winter, he can tell everyone about how Wash messed him up, and we can play that card to get someone to trade for his potential.

when you suck, please don't swing at the first pitch.

I have extra innings. always stuck with other teams broadcasters
they were talkin about walkin murphy and being real careful with him

Detroit's team
I like them, better than almost any other team I've heard this year. probably second to only Arizona's team.

oh well
You are hearing me talk.

by SteveP on Sep 12, 2007 7:37 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Magglio
was clearly sitting on the change, I wonder why we didn't go with a curve or with a FB since he was having trouble catching up to it.

by FirebatM3 on Sep 12, 2007 7:41 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

but
He did put that pitch right where laird wanted it

by Garcia34 on Sep 12, 2007 7:41 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
and Ordonez was waiting for it, it's what happens when you struggle to get your FB over and scrap your curve.

by FirebatM3 on Sep 12, 2007 7:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nice show of composure by Volquez ...
after the Maggs bomb.  Pretty impressive for a guy that's been knocked for having head issues.

by Athos on Sep 12, 2007 7:43 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

does
anyone know his pitch count

by Garcia34 on Sep 12, 2007 7:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

As long
as he hits his spots I'm happy

by Garcia34 on Sep 12, 2007 7:48 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Still a decent outing
he's shown that he can throw that changeup for a strike, but he's still prone to bouts of wildness with the FB, and that curve is looking better and better, and he can get both the changeup and the curve down. That's pretty impressive for a guy who had no third pitch a year ago.

The fastball command is troubling, but it's got such heavy movement and life that it's never going to be a 100% controllable pitch.

All in all, you can see the trip back to the minors did wonders for him. He needs to work on his delivery so he can be more consistant with the FB, but he's looking a lot better than he did a year ago.

by FirebatM3 on Sep 12, 2007 7:50 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Verlander
what's wrong with him? Is it just tonight or has his velocity been down for awhile now? Is it dead arm?

by FirebatM3 on Sep 12, 2007 7:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

maybe
but he hit 98 earlier

by Garcia34 on Sep 12, 2007 8:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Mendoza
fooled him with the sinker on the first pitch and blew the third pitch right by him. Very filthy stuff for that at bat.

by uthornfan on Sep 12, 2007 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mendoza
He put together a nice inning and has a nasty sinker.

It's ok Murph...
that just drops ya down to a paltry .410 :)

GAME SUMMARY
Eddy V threw two bad pitches... of course, he did put those three other batters on...

David Murphy continues to impress...

... and i am absolutely sick of Gerald Laird.

by oc on Sep 12, 2007 8:21 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

one of those pitches
changeup to Ordonez was right where Laird wanted it. The problem is, it was right where Mags expected it.

by FirebatM3 on Sep 12, 2007 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

exactly...
... do you suppose Jerrod S. would have called a different pitch?

what was the count?

by oc on Sep 12, 2007 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

1-0
after walking 2 straight.

I honestly don't know. Eddy was getting the changeup over and not the FB, but Mags haven't touched the fast ball and the time he did even make contact it was a GDIP. Armed with powerful hindsight, I'd say it was a badly called pitch, but it was a change in the corner. 99% of the time, it's a good pitch.

by FirebatM3 on Sep 12, 2007 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

indeed...
... but, if Mags wasn't hitting the fastball, shouldn't you just come at him with that?

by oc on Sep 12, 2007 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No if you're really
not getting the pitch over. It's a hard decision, we'll just leave it at that.

by FirebatM3 on Sep 12, 2007 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yep... overthinking this...
... just hate that we lost 2 of these 3...

we were riding a hot streak... and we had every reason to... as the teams we had been beating had been playing pretty substandard baseball...

but, i knew once we played Detoit and Anaheim again, we would find out if this team was finally breaking out of it at the plate, or if this was some sort of fluke...

with two consecutive, lame-ass losses where we could only muster 1 run... i guess i shouldn't be convinced...

by oc on Sep 12, 2007 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

it was a 1-0 change-up...
...i guess he just hung it up there...

i don't know... i would have probably thrown junk on 1-0...

or you could come in with a fastball to even the count...

but it was Mags... pitching to him is no picnic.

by oc on Sep 12, 2007 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

...oh yeah...
...and if you're gonna lose one of these three games, it's probably better to put your "B" line-up against one of the AL's best pitchers, instead of a Double-A call-up...

yeah, yeah... i know it was the second game of a double-header, and people were probably tired of running around the bases in Game 1... but, sheesh man...

... if that wasn't mailing it in...
