Rangers DFA Galarraga

We knew that the Jason Jennings signing was going to mean someone would be dropped from the 40 man roster, but the news of who it is is a pretty big surprise, to me...

Armando Galarraga has been designated for assignment by the Rangers.

This is clearly the prelude to a trade -- given that he's a nice arm with options remaining, someone would claim him on waivers -- but it surprises me that the Rangers chose to hang on to, say, Robinson Tejeda or Nelson Cruz.

Galarraga's bounceback from a bad 2006 was one of many nice stories from the farm system this year, and there was even talk that he'd be someone who'd push Kason Gabbard for a roster spot.

I also think it is interesting that the Rangers chose to hang on to Luis Mendoza rather than Galarraga, given that Galarraga has been viewed as having the better upside.

I assume that the Rangers have talked to other clubs about a deal for Galarraga, and that they'll finalize something in the next few days.

well if its involved in a trade then that makes

sense. perhaps hes in the proposed byrd deal and they just had to have him off the 40 man before that deal could be finalized. or another deal.

mendoza, one of cruz/botts, feldman.... probably at least 1 or 2 other guys id probably rather lose first.

We've been waiting for the 40 man move for awhile now, so I'm hoping at least, that this is a prelude to a Byrd/Murton swap... otherwise, JD just made a very stupid move DFA'ing Galarraga. And I kind of doubt he's that stupid.

Either way though, this does kind of indicate one thing: the Rangers haven't given up on Robinson Tejeda yet, have they?

assuming that both are healthy

that would be a difficult decision, but I might take Galarraga just because he has better control. Tejeda just doesn't know where the ball is going and that makes it difficult to see him ever having success.

I really think Galarraga can be a good ML reliever w/ his fastball and slider. They are both good pitches and in short spurts, both pitches might play up a bit.

Doesn't this move erode leverage on our side?

I don't understand how this could be a good move for us if AG is part of a trade negotiation. The other side could just insist on a different pitcher now, with the possibility of getting both. Right?

Well...

Presumably, there would be more than one team interested in him.

If only one team wants Galarraga, DFA'ing him means you lose leverage.

If several teams are interested, then a team can't really try to lowball you, because you'll just go deal with someone else.

Not panicking...yet

This reminds me of the Aki situation from a few months ago. We let him go, everyone freaked and now he is probably out for the year, so JD knew what he was doing. I am going to assume that a deal is imminent but, IF the Rangers lose him for nothing I will be bitterly disappointed.

it was eventually clear, but he could have made it so on day 1.

If he IS involved in a trade and if he IS as good as everyone thinks he is, could a Byrd, AG +1 bring back Felix Pie? I'm just curious because i really don't know how AG would stack against a top OF prospect.

Does anyone think there's a possibility that Armando Galarraga will clear waivers? He has just one option left and spent almost all of last year in Double-A. After 2008, some team is going to have to decide whether or not to start the season with him. Unless he plays incredible in Triple-A, that could be a tough decision. You have to ask yourself if the upside of having him for sure in 2009 is so much more tempting than your internal options or going out and trading for or signing a player of similar caliber next off-season.

I'd keep in mind that Texas is not the only team having to make tough decisions about the 40-man roster, and that fans have a tendency to overvalue the guys they're most familiar with.

On Trading Galarraga...

If the Rangers are able to trade Armando Galarraga in the next ten days, does that mean that the team that acquires him will have to add him to their 40-man roster? It would seem unfair to the player if they are not required to do so.

Feldman not cruz

I am tired of Feldman, he has something on hicks and JD. I think Cruz needs a chance in Spring training. Look how much it cost us to get OF help. (Edinson) I am very suprised by it being AG. I cannot attend, but would someone please ask Thad Levine tommorrow at 12:05, why scooter Feldman got so many chances to fail last year?
