Darren Oliver discussion

I saw Darren Oliver while I was working out this morning.  He looked at me and said "How is it going?"

So I used that opening to ask if he was going to be back with the Angels this year?  He replied "Nope, I'm done, over the hill."

To which I replied, "Then you are working out too hard."

It was kind of funny that he said he was over the hill.  He's younger than me so that makes me feel old.  He is still in good shape.

I see Rusty Greer, Bobby Witt, Jose Guzman, Darren, Rafael Palmeiro and John Burkett pretty regularly at the health club.  All seem pretty nice except Palmeiro who always looks like he crawled out from under a rock and and doesn't talk to anyone except pretty girls.

I hate Darren Oliver
I mean, HATE him.  I'm more bitter about that 3/$20million contract than Chan Ho Park's.  I never thought he was good and hated watching him pitch.

Maybe I'm a bit irrational - I just remember seeing those horrible starts in 2000 after our playoff run thinking to myself that this cannot be happening.  And I blame Oliver.

dude...
...there's no reason to hate somebody if you don't know them.

according to jimmy-G, he seems like a nice bloke.

I agree
I agree that he wasn't a good pitcher for us (anyone?).  His was one of the Tom Hicks negotiated contracts, I don't think Melvin wanted him.

Seems like a decent guy though.  Wouldn't mind having a beer with him and listening to baseball stories (lots of homeruns allowed).

I agree
...that saying I hate Darren Oliver is not accurate - I don't hate the guy, I don't know him.  I did absolutely hate every minute he played with Texas, though.  Very few players got me so frustrated and riled up as Oliver (Benji Gil, Richard Hidalgo, Brian Jordan are some of the elites).

word...
...for me, it was Inky...

...always seemed like that guy would strike out in the clutch...

"Clutch" Nonperformer
in my book is Dean Effing Palmer. I cannot explain how many times I would just yell at the TV Screen.

Palmer
Nonsabermetrically, he was the guy that just effed with me.

I think it's because I was home in Dallas to listen that summer.  I have flashbulb memories of waiting in the car before meeting people, listening to his rally-killing/game-ending Ks.

My undying impression of him is he just couldn't get it done.

Yep..
it seemed like he would always either pop up or strikeout in clutch situations.

Oliver
I actually did have some beers with him once, many moons ago in a bar in Tulsa when he was still in AA. He was friends with or somehow knew one of my fraternity brothers and he sat at our table and chatted for a few beers. Super nice guy.

On a Related Note...
I saw Kevin Millwood a couple weeks ago at Billy Bob's. I was standing behind him and Josh Frazier (BP Catcher) in line for beer. I talked to them both for about 10 minutes while we waited. Interestingly, I was told that Kevin only gets recognized about 10% of the time. They were both awesome guys to BS with.

Kevin Millwood
drinking beer in the offseason.  Shocking.

Yeah
he seems to pound those weights hard in the offseason.

12 ounces at a time.

Yeah, well
Do any of you remember the story in Dallas News about one year ago about how Brad Wilkerson was laying off the beer (even during his beloved Florida championship game) to be in better shape so he could play baseball at a reasonable level?  Look how well that worked out.  I say - drink all the beers you want, Milwood cause you're better than Wilkerson, even out of shape.
