Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Monday a.m. things

T.R. Sullivan talks about the Rangers going back to Surprise for spring training, mentioning that several players -- including Gerald Laird, Ian Kinsler, Wes Littleton, and Scott Feldman -- are already out there and working out, even though pitchers and catchers don't report for another few days.

U.S.S. Mariner ran the 2008 season 100 times, and the M's, surprisingly, sucked.  Even more surprisingly, the A's won the division more often than the Angels, and the Rangers were about as good as the M's.

Mariners
It wouldn't surprise me to have the Mariners finish anywhere from 2nd to 4th, though 2nd a bit ahead of the Rangers seems the most likely.  They are going to have a pretty good rotation, but that offense is not good, and the team has very little depth.  If anyone goes down with injury they are done.

M's O
why does everyone constantly talk about how bad the M's offense might be

I seriously don't think the Rangers will necessarily be much better and I'm not sure our pitching is as good.

I can agree with everyone that I don't think the M's are going to be that good, but I don't think they will have to do much to finish second in the AL West.

not sure our pitching is as good
this might be a typo of some sort but I am quite sure how the rangers pitching will stack up against the M's

Ditto
the Mariners should have a better rotation, weaker bullpen.  I was not comparing the Rangers offense to the Mariners, but I actually expect them to outscore Seattle this year unless the M's add a big bat at some point.  Seriously, who in that lineup do you really fear?

Keep in mind that that lineup lost Guillen and gained Wilkerson, who will probably be pretty ho hum even if he manages to stay healthy.  Sum it up, pitching got better, offense got worse.  They'll win about 80 games unless they make some more moves.

A working class hero is something to be.

Why wouldn't salty be there?
He should be getting the head start on the #1 catching job not laird.  Hopefully Wash's hatred toward laird will land Salts the starting gig.
Ummm, I got nothing good to put here right now, that sucks!

Hopefully
Salty's superior talent will land him the starting job.

A's
the caveat of assuming that current/probable injuries won't affect the A's kind of affects these analyses quite a bit.  Rich Harden injured vs non-injured is like having maybe or maybe not having a Cy Young contender around...

Though it is kind of unsettling to know that the same injuries caveat applied to the Rangers (Hamilton, Bradley, Blalock, Jennings) didn't give Texas a boost.

Word
I'd think that if Blalock, Bradley, Hamilton and Jennings are all healthy and productive we've got a pretty damn good shot at the playoffs.

But what are the chances all four of our biggest injury question marks all end up being healthy the whole season?

This is my signature.

Defense
makes the difference.  I thought it was interesting how much the Mariners poor defense cost them in the projections.  I remember hearing Theo Epstein talk about team defense as the new OBP a while back.  When I think about having a lot of OF with CF abilities, it makes me feel better about the lack of bashers out there.

Mariners
Here's another analysis of the Bedard trade. Basically, given the Mariners pythagoran record last year and the loss of Jones, the Mariners really didn't improve that much.

Ian in HD!
This will be my first season with HDTV.  I've been impatiently waiting to see the Rangers in HD this season...especially Ian Kinsler.  My God, that is one of the most gorgeous men on this planet!

Ian, won't you be mine?

Good luck
seeing him in HD.

Unless KDFI has changed for this season, very few of the Ranger games will be in HD. Every so often they might be on FSNHD, otherwise your only chance will be on ESPN which doesn't happen very often. Even then sometimes when ESPN carries the game they'll simulcast it on KDFI, which means ESPN will be blacked out, and normally KDFI won't be in HD.
