Around SBN: Kentucky Football: Tee Martin Reportedly Leaving for USC

Saturday a.m. things

Evan Grant has some quotes from Jon Daniels about the possibility of Nolan Ryan joining the Rangers as team president, with Daniels having positive things to say about it.

Anthony Andro has an item up saying that the Rangers and Ian Kinsler are still discussing a long-term deal, but aren't real close.

Andro and Grant also both mention that there are some discussions about bringing Kevin Mench back on a minor league deal.  The Rangers have apparently had some interest in a righthanded bench bat, to provide some insurance in case Nelson Cruz and Jason Botts flame out, but I don't know how interested Mench would really be in coming back to Texas to, most likely, spend the bulk of the year in Oklahoma.

T.R. Sullivan has an update on Omar Beltre and Alexi Ogando.  Nothing has changed.  They aren't coming to the U.S. anytime soon.

Sullivan also says that Daniels has talked to several teams about Armando Galarraga, and hopes to get a deal done this weekend...

Beltre/Ogando
George W. Bush owes the Rangers. The least he could do is take a break from tapping my phone and get those guys over here. Maybe if we sweeten the deal by allowing him to waterboard them once they get here he'd do it.

Greatness...
if we waterbord them at least we will know they aren't terrorists.

Seriously though it is frustrating that we can't get them over here.

This is one of the funniest comments I've ever read on this blog!

Damn straight he owes...
I don't like the guy as president of the US...but maybe he'll buy the team back from Hicks!

Omar Beltre and Alexi Ogando
When I read T.R.'s article this morning, it said these guys were both on the 40-man roster.  Looks like he caught his own error.

But Daniels said, "it is coming to the point where the Rangers may have to let both pitchers go and allow them to pitch in a higher league in another country like Japan."

Does anybody know how they've maintained rights to foreign players that can't come over here?  It seems like these guys have been on the 40-man roster in the past.  Is there a special provision from Selig's office that allowed them to be removed, but somehow protected?

by Wemedge on Feb 2, 2008 11:00 AM CST reply actions

They are on the 40
But they're on the restricted list so they don't count againt the 40-man limit.

by AZranger on Feb 2, 2008 11:11 AM CST up reply actions

restricted list
both are on the restricted list, not sure if theres any rule saying how long a player can be on that list but from the sounds of things the rangers want to do what is best for the players by allowing them to play in japan.

I think the fear is they release them and suddenly another team gets them into the country but by all reports these guys wont be let in anytime soon

Galarraga...

Well at least this puts a stop to those that said a deal was already in place with the Cubs involving Byrd and AG.

Daniels picked Galarraga as the player to remove from the 40 hoping to deal him for a younger talent that is years away from the 40.

Lets hope it works out, because if people are considering dealing for him, there is now way he clears waviers.

A coupla weeks ago ...
... the Rangers had a mini-camp for the high minors pitchers - Harrison, Hurley, Mathis, Mendoza, maybe Murray.  I assume that Galarraga was there, but I don't know for sure.  It's kinda interesting that shortly thereafter Galarraga was DFA'd.  Makes you wonder if the Rangers spotted the weakling and culled the herd.

Interesting idea.  I wonder which catcher, SS, or CF Daniels is trying to get for him.

Reminds me - value of catchers
Jamey mentioned the trade value of our catching depth the other day, and this post at Right Field Bleachers which lusts after Taylor Teagarden kinda touches on that - http://www.rightfieldbleachers.com/2008/01/bagging-teagarden.html - read the comments, too.

And speaking of Tea, Grant Schiller interviewed him at fanfest the other day -

Dream Team
I'd love to see Mark Cuban and Jerry Jones partner up an make a hostile takeover of the Rangers.  Hell, Hicks paid 250K for the team.  Take it over for 750K.

Then hire Nolan as team president and steal Omar Minaya away from the Mets.

That's my fantasy.

Minaya, huh?
The guy who traded Milledge for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider last month?

And, lest we forgot, the guy who traded Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano, straight-up?

Jim Duquette was the GM who traded Kazmir for Zambrano

Hicks paid 250,000 for the team?
really. I'll take the team over for 750,000 right now you dolt.
