Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

A bunch of random things

It occurred to me today...is Lastings Milledge the new Milton Bradley?

Milledge's skill set now is similar to Bradley's as a 22 year old.  Milledge has a little more power, but they were both toolsy centerfielders who had a bunch of solid skills but no one signature tool that you could hang your hat on.  Both dealt with injury issues and off-the-field issues.

Bradley was dealt by the Expos for a return that was considered...insufficient, from a talent standpoint.  Milledge was dealt to the Nats (formerly the Expos) for an underwhelming package.

* * *

I thought of that comparison after reading this John Manuel chat session, where Manuel said, in response to a question about whether Milledge would be a stud or a bust:

Neither for Milledge; I think he'll be Ok but more of a perennial tease, kind of a tweener. I don't think the power projected for him when he was in the low minors will ever really materialize.

That screamed Bradley, to me.

The other thing that I thought about, regarding this chat...last year at this time, with a prospect chat, I could just hit Ctrl-F, type in "Hurley", hit return, and be done.  Now I have to go through and read every question, because there are so many Ranger prospects who could get mentions in one of these sessions...

* * *

If you're still bummed about McCarthy and Millwood being scratched, consider this...the D-Rays have had to scratch Scott Kazmir and David Price from their first spring outings.

* * *

Bill Simmons' latest mailbag has a couple of Mavs related items I wanted to mention (although I promise I'm not going to keep mentioning the Mavs or the Kidd trade every day).  First:

Maybe Devin Harris isn't an elite point guard, but he's locked up in a reasonable contract (five years, $43 million) and there's an good chance he could thrive without Avery Johnson (the biggest control freak in the league) looking over his shoulder and nitpicking everything he's doing.

zywica and I have both talked about this...but I find it interesting that you now have a national writer talking about what a control freak Avery is.

And then this:

Q: You're missing the point, OK? Jason Kidd is the fake French chick from the '80s classic "Better Off Dead," and Cusack plays the Mavs. The Finals vs. Miami were Lane Meyer getting dumped by his girlfriend, losing the drag race to the Asian Howard Cosells is the equivalent of getting upset by Golden State, and trading for Jason Kidd is the French girl moving in next door. Jason is gonna help the Mavs get that bitchin' Camaro fixed. It's not so much a personnel problem as a confidence problem with the Mavs. Yes, that are REALLY shallow at Center, but I've never seen Dampier play with more enthusiasm than he has with Kidd. I'm telling you, they'll be parking that Camaro on the infield and raising that trophy yet.
-- Rob B., Dallas

I think this analogy is the first thing that's made me feel maybe almost sort of okay about the trade.

* * *

And part of the reason for that, fwiw, is that "Better Off Dead" is one of those movies that hit the sweet spot in my personal development.

I was explaining to someone at work today that I thought "Stripes" was the perfect movie as a 13 year old boy, because it had a lot of dumb visual humor, a lot of hilarious lines (I still crack up when Psycho/Francis say, "If any of you...HO-mos touches me...I'll kill you"), and lots of titties.  What more could you want?

But "Better Off Dead" is a movie I watched over and over again as a 15 and 16 year old because I related to Lane, because I was a geeky loser teen with no girlfriend, and because I felt like it encapsulated, better than any movie, what it felt like to be a geeky loser teen (at least until "Superbad," which definitely brought back some uncomfortable high school memories).  So the analogy in that mailbag question speaks to me.

* * *

Also, if we are going to pursue this analogy, Mark Cuban is Curtis Armstrong.  I'm just not sure if the fat neighbor is the Spurs or the Suns.  Maybe he's Kobe.

* * *

It occurs to me that, if I were to go through and identify movie characters that I really identified with, Cusack's characters in "Say Anything" and "High Fidelity" are also high on the list.  Maybe Cusack is my cinematic doppleganger...

* * *

Does anyone else find themselves going through the box score from a spring training game like today, and reacting to each good thing (like Josh Hamilton's line or Luis Mendoza's performance) with a, "Alright, this is a sign of things to come!", and each bad thing with a, "It doesn't matter, it is just spring training"?

* * *

The only best picture nominee I saw was "No Country For Old Men."  And you know, for about 5 minutes after I got done watching that movie, I thought about getting my hair cut like Chgura's.

However, yes, I'm seriously bummed about McCarthy. As much as i hated the fact we got rid of John Danks. I've got to loves me some BGR. Get that muscular arm strong Brandon. Maybe you'll be ready to toss a few innings on Monday.

Avery control freak,
I agree he is. But Simmons is a joke of a writer. He's basically a famous blogger. Nothing more. He also said that the Mavs will be closer to missing the playoffs this year than winning the title. So I wouldn't put any stock into anything he says. In fact because he wrote that, I'm going to start believing the opposite. Avery is Wade Phillips. Nah, he's definitely a control freak.

speaking of books
I'm reading... The Way of the Wild Heart by John Eldridge. It takes you into like six stages all men should go on through on way as men to becoming that cowboy, warrior, lover, king, and sage. I guess I've embarked on an adventure to reclaim my manhood.

Btw... I never really thought I;d be interested in a book like this. But, so far i'm half way through this and really have enjoyed it.

Don't know if that is correct grammer but the Mavs just signed Jamal Magloire...

That is 2 centers that are pretty good.

Magloire is a upgrade over Diop on offense, and isn't a bad defender.

I like the chances with this center core than the center core before the trade...

Movies
I went to see every movie I wanted at will the last couple months of 2007, so I try not to be judgmental.

I don't understand how people passed on so many good flicks.  I just keep hearing again and again how nobody saw any nominees.

Here's one person's take:

Every year there are at least 20 or 25 films that are somewhere between excellent, very good or good enough to watch and think about later. If regular people in Boston and Saskatchewan are living such insulated and cut-off lives that they can't be bothered to go to some of these films unless it has an advertised 'happy pill' vibe then the hell with them. They're children. I have no time for childishness, and neither does anyone else of any worth. Life is short.

http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/archives/2008/02/addressing_the.php

All that said, my favorite all-around of 2007 was Superbad.

Go Strangers.

It was completely driven by the personas of Vaughn and Wilson, which aren't that funny to begin with.  It's sole redeeming quality was the incredible hotness of Rachel McAdams.

Yes and Yes
You disagree?  The first time I watched Swingers I giggled every now and then, but I've struggled to watch anything else with him in it.

As for McAdams--seriously?  You don't think she's great?  Perhaps hot is the wrong word, in terms of guy-speak--she's more beautiful than hot.

by brettgardner on Feb 28, 2008 9:48 AM CST up reply actions

I think she's very cute
But she's not the wood growing type. But hey, few things in life are more subjective than taste in women.

And for my generation, Swingers is only slightly behind Pulp Fiction in the cult classic category.

2007 films
I thought the first hour plus of Superbad were insanely funny - after that it stumbled home - especially the Rogen/Hader cop storyline.

I'm sticking with There Will Be Blood as the best film of the year.

by Randy Richardson on Feb 27, 2008 9:29 PM CST up reply actions

There Will Be Blood
I'm just a huge PT Anderson fan.  Regardless of what point it's at, if I turn on Boogie Nights it's not really in my power to walk away before the credits roll.

And in very abstract terms I can relate to 70s pornographers with drug addictions and deep human flaws that derail their relationships.

But actually, I can't.  I love them anyway.  He just sells that story as a director.

Then of course there are characters like in Punch-Drunk Love and Magnolia that I can relate to no problem, here and now.  And those movies are awesome.

With There Will Be Blood I was watching people I believe but just don't know, even projecting them to modern times.  And then the shots (explosions, lighting, the huge panoramas), really majestic stuff but it still just didn't get my heart.

Go Strangers.

by miles on Feb 27, 2008 9:38 PM CST up reply actions

What would you have had him do?
CJ made a sweeping generalistic statement about ballplayers. When you say that, ballplayers are going to get upset. Guess what: his teammates are ballplayers. This could have turned into a bigger issue, but Mike talked to him, and squashed it. He told the media about it to make it clear that the issue had been handled, and that everybody should move on.

You guys need to grow up and get over the fact that your idol CJ Wilson stepped in it this time. He is not god, and he was, in fact, WRONG. I know it's hard to except when you're dedicated fan of someone, but CJ is not infallable. I know you all think it's cool to "fight the power" but in organized sports, you just can't step out on your fellow team members like that. It threatens the very makeup of the clubhouse, your reputation, and your team. I think CJ realized that, and he has backed down. Maybe all you people who are busy bashing Mike Young, Evan Grant and all the rest should do the same.

In fact, I'm wishing CJ where back just so he could tell all of you to bury the hatchet and get over this.

I personally wish he had never posted on this site because it leads fans to act as you described.  I prefer my players to be faceless drones who are judged only by their production on the field.  Now, having said that....

"heres to you brett for making me get all wet" -NYTXFAN

by jparks77 on Feb 27, 2008 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

I'm just tired of the Michael Young bashing
He doesn't deserve it, and I don't like to see it. And why does me wanting to converse with CJ make any difference here? That doesn't have any bearing on my point at all.

The point I'm making too many posters here refuse to admit that their beloved blogging celebrity was wrong, and are instead taking their ire out on other players and sportswriters. It's an irrational, shortsighted opinion, that doesn't take into account the fact that other ballplayers might exist, or even have feelings and opinions as well.

And as for me "speaking for CJ" - that's not my intent. But with the comment he made on his blog, and the way he has kept low-key about all this tells me he's not upset about all this. I have a feeling that if he really felt he had been wronged, he would have let us know about it by now - and since he hasn't, there's no reason for everybody to continue to try and advance this lost cause of "defending" CJ. If anything, the people that are trying to speak for CJ are the ones who insist that he is right, and his opinions alone count, not me.

I'm just trying to bring some rational insight to the situation - I don't see how that's a bad thing.
