Nolan was a great pitcher
And I'm a huge fan of his, but I don't really have a good feeling about this.

If he gets involved in the baseball side of the organization, this could destroy everything good that's happened in the past year.

Destroy Everything Good?
JD is a giant reason why this thing has sucked for 7 out of 8 years. The moment (before AS Break 2004) it looked like the worm was geing to turn, JD becomes Hart's right-hand man. How has that worked out?

This franchise is viewed as an absolute joke nationally, not just by fans and media but by other major league players as well.

Hopefully Nolan helps turn that view and is given a meaningful voice within the organization.

Huh?
So building a top 5 farm system is a bad thing?  Preparing the organization to consistently compete in the future, relying largely on home-grown talent, is a bad thing?  Have you not noticed the radical change in direction this organization has taken since JD replaced Hart?

Honestly, it sounds like you're just being negative for negativity's sake.

Call me crazy
How is the GM, who has been the GM for two years now, the reason we have sucked for 7-8 years? Just because he was Harts right hand man doesn't mean he had any say in what went on. For all we know that could have just meant he got Hart his coffee in the morning and carried his clubs at Dallas National.

7 out of 8 years?
He has only been the GM for 2?

Franchise is not taken seriously, but definatly not looked at as a joke, that would be the Kansas City Royals.

Also what information do you have that tells you that Nolan Ryan knows anymore than JD does? Who I think is doing a great job, personally.

Seriously
This is a totally fake position right?

Just there to attract attention so no one wonders who's really in charge...

by Wes Cox on Feb 6, 2008 10:23 AM CST reply actions

That's what I think.
I don't see how Nolan is going to be pushing for trades or influencing JD in anyway. Just a big name to attract attention.

Why is everyone worried?
This team has done a lot to build up it's system, and I'm sure Nolan recognizes that.  Not sure what he will actually do, but I see it as a positive...I doubt he comes in with a hammer and tears the thing down.

by JB @ Lone Star Ball on Feb 6, 2008 10:25 AM CST reply actions

The worry,
I think is if this is a real position and he really wants to work.  My worry would be that he comes in, looks at the roster and says, "JD, we got to get better now."

I don't know how much he cares about Beaven, Main, Feliz, Santana, etc.  I know he was good at pitching and ranching, but I don't know if he needs any other role in an organization other than PR.

If it is a PR position, then great.

I wonder if
he'll have to sell his interest in the Express and Hooks (probably to his sons).  Don't see MLB letting him run one run franchise while having an interest in two minor league teams tied to another major league club (Astros).

by neatfreakgeek on Feb 6, 2008 10:32 AM CST reply actions

I'm not too worried
I just don't see this turning into a Larry Lucchino situation. I just see Nolan as a familiar face that can maybe get the fans to feel like they have a connection with the team.

He alreay owns two minor league teams (both won their division in 2006). I'm guessing he understands he doesn't need to micromanage in his businesses.

Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

Ryan
My gut reaction was to not like it, in direct relation to liking JD's work since the trade deadline.

But if Ryan keeps his distance, just provides info where it's helpful, it'll be cool.

I see an unnecessary risk, just a move to bring out some more fans.  If Ryan accomplishes that, great I guess.  JD's done nothing to obscure himself from the public; it's just Ryan's special kind of celebrity that the fan base remembers him and takes to him.

Go Strangers.

RELAX !!

It's a great thing. Any time you add a man of Nolan Ryan's stature to your team its a PLUS not a minus.

Fun slipup in Sullivan's MLB.com piece
"Ryan is expected to be introduced at a 3 p.m. CT press conference at The Ballpark in Arlington. Ryan has spent the past four years as a special assistant with the Houston Astros."

So the club's own officialbeat writer has reverted to calling it The Ballpark in Arlington. Whoops!

Evan Grant
I think he does a damn fine job as beat writer, but it seems like the team never lets him have the scoop on any of the big moves. It's usually TR and his buddies at the Startlegram with the breaking news.

The TIcket is saying...
That JD will be reporting directly to Nolan and that is not just a fluff job. It is in charge of baseball operations.

That could be scary.
