FYI - during the game on KRLD today
Victor Rojas said that Jaoquin Benoit is having arm strength problems because he broke his Winter routine and didn't throw at all for 4 months.  Rojas proceeded to lambast him for this decision.

Why?
Bigleagueitis? Injury?

I hope not either one.

Didn't pitch Winter ball
for the like the first time ever is what Rojas said, I think.  Benoit failed to do any tossing on his own, and without his usual Dominican Winter ball routine he ended up idle for 4 months.

That's incredible.
2/26/08 R.I.P. The BGL ... out.

by Chase Irwin on Mar 2, 2008 6:44 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

well he did pitch a ton of games last year
dont mind him skipping winter ball, but you would hope he would do whats needed to be ready for ST...

huh?
so teams get upset when their players get hurt in winter ball, but then they they get upset when they don't?? wtf.

It's not that Benoit didn't play in winterball
That's not the issue. The issue is, he sat on his keester for 4 months, and did nothing. No throwing program to stay in shape, zilch. Hence, he showed up in spring training out of shape, and is now "10 days behind" as Mark Connor puts it, in terms of conditioning.

That was not a good decision by Joaquin, and you have to expect better from a guy who was just awarded a big contract and named the 2007 pitcher of the year this offseason. If he has a rough first half, this is going to be talked about all year.

chill peeps
only 10 days? come on...10 days? Even Conner says that he has had good bullpen sessions. He'll slowly build up his strength. No biggie...

And this after we named him pitcher of the year...
Taking that into consideriation, Victor Rojas has every right to lambast him. In fact, I think I will too: nice work ethic, Joaquin. Of all the players in camp, your "pitcher of the year" should not be the one that is out of shape.

This is just further proof that award should have gone to CJ Wilson.

Jack was better than CJ last year.
That's why get got the award. Weird logic you have there.

CJ
Was the better story, and is the one being considered for the closer's role, not Benoit. In fact, Benoit just showed up for spring training out of conditiion due to an offseason spent doing... who knows what. That's soemthing I would have expected from Vicente Padilla, but not Benoit.

My point is, there is sometimes more to an award than plain peformance and stats. Yeah, it drives the statheads like the guys at FJM nuts, but sometimes, personality and drive should be a factor in determining who gets awards. And this one is a perfect example, IMO.

oh please
now, the rangers should have looked into the future to see that Jack didn't do something he's always done? Are you really questioning his personality? Really? Do you even know him? I'm glad he doesn't talk to the stupid media. And, how the hell can you question his 'drive'? Him being the best Rangers pitcher last year kinda shows what kind of 'drive' he has, don't you think?

Geez.

There is a lot
wrong with this post.

For instance, why would you expect Padilla to show up out of shape? He's never done it before to my knowledge.

And, aren't you the same guy that was ripping CJ to shreds on here over douche-gate, but now you are apparently suggesting that he should have gotten the pitcher of the year award because he has a great personality?

CJ made a mistake on his D-gate thing
And I did have a problem with that. But only with that. Otherwise, I think he's a good guy, and an intellegent ballplayer.

I don't recall ever saying CJ's entire personality sucked, just that he'd made a mistake. I at least, can diferentiate between critcizing him for a mistake, and hating him completely. If people took my comments to mean I was down on CJ completely, that's not the case.

Again, CJ is the leading candidate for the closers role. He had a great year last year, and the way he opened himself up to the public made him a great story. His work ethic and values make him a good role model for younger players. All that tells me he's a more highly regarded pitcher than Jack Benoit. Not to say that Benoit didn't have a career year last year as well, but I think the award should have gone to CJ, based on the fact that he does, in fact, appear to be a more valuable pitcher to the organization.

As for the Padilla crack - I'll concede bad judgement on that. That wasn't a good comparison, I just don't expect much from Padilla these days, so it wouldn't have suprised me if he had shown up to ST underconditioned. That was the point I was trying to make, although, thankfully, that is indeed not the case, Vinny has shown up with a smile and a great work ethic.

But I still think that the fact that our PoTY, whom we just signed to s 3-year deal, has shown up to ST behind the curve is not a good thing. And it could indeed have ramifacations to his early-season performance - it's just not a good thing, and it shows Benoit did definitely get lazy this offseason. I don't know about any personal issues he might have had, but when you're a big-league player who has just been rewarded with some serious accolades, you have certain responsibities. And showing up to ST ready to go is one of them.

meh
no biggie, he'll be strong for the 2nd half atleast. Jack's a beast, best stuff on the staff, i'll give him some slack here. Victor needs to chill...

just curious
did he lambast all the other pitchers who didn't pitch over the winter?

by SteveP on Mar 3, 2008 12:33 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

sounds like colt griffith
royals sign him (#9 pick in the draft IIRC) to a huge contract

then he sat around from the end of his HS career in marshall and didnt pick up a ball until he went to ST. btw he was the guy who hit 101 MPH in high school - was filmed by ESPN.

so...
did the royals talk to him about any of this? throwing/etc? no
did the royals send him a suggested routine? no
did the royals do anything? no.

its one of the reasons i dont blame the royals for what happened with him

by knockoutking24 on Mar 2, 2008 8:43 PM CST   0 recs

scratch that
one reason i do blame them

by knockoutking24 on Mar 2, 2008 8:44 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Do you know
for a fact that Royals failed to do those things?

I'd be interested to know where you're getting that info, cause it sounds unbelievable to me. (Not saying you're lying, just saying I find it hard to believe and would love to see a source.)

from him.
he helped out w/ my lil brothers baseball team from time to time (they were based in marshall/had a lot of players from marshall or who are playing for marshall now. ironically they are getting looked at for football. one by texas and the other went to tOSU - ohio state - on the first weekend he was able to)

they basically left him alone. yes, he was dumb for not picking up a ball. but its really hard (imo) to give a HS kid (almost any) a ton of money because theres a lot that once they get that money, as a result of a not great work ethic,  something the team SHOULD know about if your gonna give that many mil to someone - and not follow up on it.

by knockoutking24 on Mar 2, 2008 11:08 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Very interesting if true
I find it very hard to believe, but if you heard it straight from the horse's mouth, then... damn.

That's horrible player development by the Royals and a damn shame for the kid (though I guess by now he's a man).

You'd think once a team spends that sort of dough on a youngster they'd want to give him as much help as possible to help assimilate him into pro baseball, and especially a kid like Colt, who, iirc, didn't pitch much until late in his high school career and was EXTREMELY raw.

Oh
and it's Griffin. The Royals spent a ton on him and Roscoe Crosby in the same draft, then allowed Crosby to go to Clemson and split his time between baseball with them and football with the Tigers. Those sorts of pro-Baseball/college-other sports splits almost NEVER work.

oh, and its the royals
...

anyway he retired b/c of complications from labrum surgery.

huh?
I said the Royals.

The Tigers thing was about Roscoe Crosby playing football at Clemson... the Clemson Tigers.
