Batters' BABIP

A fascinating article by Peter Bendix and Chris Dutton over at Hardball Times. It basically comes up with a better formula for a player's expected BABIP than the usual line drive percentage + .120, utilizing all sorts of fun stuff. Worth a read.

Hate Week Picture Contest

Considering it is Hate Week, the holiest of all weeks, I propose a little Hate Week Picture Contest. The rules are simple

1) The picture must be photoshopped by you. In other words, it must be an original work. We've all seen the picture of Mangino farting fire on the Jayhawk. You didn't do that. Stop insulting our intelligence.

2) It must somehow highlight the MU/KU rivalry. No bacon pictures.

3) Deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Thursday (arbitrary deadlines, FTW!).

4) Tinypic.com is your friend.

I'll start by lobbing a softball.

BTB: Can Chris Davis hit 70 homers?

In a very thought-provoking piece over at Beyond the Boxscore, Peter Bendix wonders if anyone will ever hit 70 home runs in a season again. It's an interesting topic in and of itself (and master SBNation multi-tasker philkid3 has already hit up the comments), but what makes it even more eye-catching is this:

Certainly, hitting 70 homers is quite difficult - only two players have ever done this, and only two players even managed 40 homers in 2008. But one player comes to mind as having perhaps the most reasonable chance to smack 70 homers: Rangers slugger Chris Davis.

Bendix then breaks down what he feels are the three things that absolutely have to happen in order for Davis (or other hitters) to reach the 70 plateau. In short:

1) Get a lot of plate appearances

2) Minimize the strikeouts and the walks

3) Hit lots of fly balls

4) Hit those fly balls a long way

I'm clearly not doing his piece justice, as it goes into far greater detail. It's definitely worth a read, if only because it mentions the Rangers during a time when basically nobody wants to talk about the Rangers except LSBers.

Dodging a bullet: Top recruit picks Memphis over KU

Xavier Henry, the near-consensus pick as the No. 1 recruit in the nation, has ended his long recruitment process by choosing Memphis over Kansas.

Per the ESPN.com story:

Xavier Henry, the top-ranked player in the ESPNU 100, announced Tuesday morning he will join his brother at Memphis next season.

"Ultimately playing with my brother and keeping the family together helped make my decision," said Henry of Putnam City High in Oklahoma City. "My parents are okay with it; we're together."...

As a junior, the 6-foot-7 Henry averaged 26.7 points and 7.2 rebounds as Putnam City (25-2) lost in the Oklahoma's Class 6A quarterfinals.

He's following his brother C.J. Henry, who currently plays for Memphis, instead of choosing Kansas, both his parents' alma mater.

Kansas is obviously still going to have a solid recruiting class, but this probably kept it from being a legendary one.

Kissing Suzy Kolber on Peter King

The boys at KSK follow the good ol' Fire Joe Morgan fisking tradition by ripping apart Peter King. Definitely worth a read.

OT: Music

In the spirit of LiamP's brilliant idea for a FanPost, I figured that maybe we could switch the focus from TV to music.

Using the blueprint laid out by our good friend Liam, here are the questions:

1.  Name 2 bands/groups/artists that you absolutely cannot live without.

2.  Name 2 bands/groups/artists that your friends listen to that you absolutely do not understand the appeal of.

3.  Name 1 band/group/artist that you watch that more people should listen to.

See what I did there? I just changed the words. If it ain't broke...

Here's my answers:

1. Ben Folds Five (notsomuch Ben Folds the solo artist) and Kanye West

2. Linkin Park and Eminem

3. Ray LaMontagne (if you're in a chill kind of mood)

Mizzou... dancin'?

So says ESPN "Bracketologist" Joe Lunardi, who puts the Tigers in his newest bracket.

"Now ghtd36," you say, "why would I care about that? Not only is Lundari the head of a made-up subject matter with a name created specifically as a marketing tool for ESPN, and not only is he wrong about half the time, but it's freakin' November! This is football season! Why in the world is this notable?"

The notability comes in looking at the actual bracket. Mizzou gets a No. 11 seed in the West Region, and would play in Minneapolis.

Still not enough for you? Take a look:

Kansas in the first round. Notre Dame in the second round.

Oh sweet sexy Jesus, please let this happen.

UT Lineman Booted for Anti-Obama Facebook Status

Via Deadspin, now ex-backup center for the Texas Longhorns Buck Burnette has been kicked off the team. Not to editorialize, but he wrote a pretty ignorant thing by almost everyone's standards on his Facebook status about our new President-elect, and Mack Brown booted him off the team.
Kind of sad, because as almost anyone who's been there will tell you, Austin is one of the most tolerant cities in America, and I know for a fact that the over-over-over-overwhelming majority of the UT faithful don't subscribe to that line of thinking.
