Maddux it is

Per DMN blog

Weird that they "overwhelmed" Maddux...that would appear the necessary treatment for someone like Peterson or Mazzone.  Nolan's fingerprints all over this move obviously.

The Rangers will name Mike Maddux pitching coach perhaps as early as Monday, a source with knowledge of the process said Sunday night.

GM Jon Daniels confirmed only that the Rangers had been in touch with Maddux this weekend. He did not confirm or deny the report. The Rangers were able to contact Maddux about the job officially on Saturday, a day after his contract with Milwaukee expired. Maddux, 47, has been the Brewers pitching coach the last six seasons. Milwaukee had extended him an offer to remain as new manager Ken Macha's pitching coach, but Maddux refrained from signing anything until talking to the Rangers.

Maddux, the oider brother of Greg Maddux, is likely to cite Nolan Ryan's presence as a reason for electing to leave for the Rangers. Maddux's first job as a coach was with the Ryan-owned Double-A Round Rock Express in 2000.

In Maddux's first year in Milwaukee, the Brewers posted a 5.02 ERA and ranked 13th in the NL, but by this season, they had improved to 3.85, which ranked second in the league.

UPDATE: Brewers GM Doug Melvin is confirming that Maddux is coming to the Rangers. Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that the Rangers "overwhelmed" Maddux with a multi-year deal. I have no details on the contract, but you can be pretty certain Maddux will receive at least three years.

I liked Peterson better.

Wow, OT: Cowboys acquire (the good) Roy Williams

A source in Dallas said the deal involves multiple picks, including a first-rounder, and the Cowboys reworked Williams' contract.

[Per ESPN, per bloggingtheboys.com:  2nd Rounder in 2009, 2nd Rounder in 2010]

For months, the Lions have said they are not shopping Williams. As recently as Monday, general manager Martin Mayhew said he had not made calls about Williams and had told Williams that.

But the Lions have always maintained that they would listen to offers for Williams, as they would any other player, and Mayhew allowed Monday that a "very interesting" offer could get a deal done.

The NFL trade deadline was 4 p.m.

Rick Peterson is into the Rangers

Not surprised.

http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/10/coaching-search-update.html

Former Oakland and New York Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson is genuinely interested in the job and has had at least two conversations with Rangers officials. No word on when - or if - an interveiw will officially be scheduled. But I expect the Rangers to start talking with candidates for all four openings this week.

"There is no question I'm intrigued about this possibility," said Peterson, who was fired by the New York Mets at midseason. "This is my life's work and I've got a passion for it. You look at the people that are there and there are some great people. I've had this challenge twice before and it's always exciting for someone who does what I do."

Would Nolan crowd Peterson out?  Or is Nolan simply focused on mental and physical conditioning (he is, after all, team president and not the pitching coach)?

If this can work - and the basis for the guy's interest is as plain as a Happy Dutchman - he's a great choice.  I like whoever the hire is as a day-to-day mentor to the ML staff, with Nolan as the system-wide overseer.

I keep linking this article in comments.

OT: RIP David Foster Wallace

There are so many sad things about this death. It's a loss of letters but more jarring is the premature end of such a sui generis success story.

You hate to see people pick a journey, get so good at it, come into the public eye at an age where you can even relate to them, then destroy themselves. It makes you wonder if that's a genuine risk of doing well in life.

I hope to learn more about this special talent and why he made this choice, why he wasn't looking forward to anything else.

Batting Stance Guy - Rangers edition

Very entertaining. I never think about Neuschler anymore.

The Blalock swing is fricking perfect.

Porcello

Tough for these eyes to track specific pitch movements, but the verbiage at the end about the player making Detroit's rotation next year...good grief.

Four plus pitches, and he's probably in AA this year. Who knows?

I don't think anyone believed he'd come this fast. Freak.

Hurley delayed; Minors 7/21

http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/07/feldman-starts-tonight.html

RHP Scott Feldman will start in place of RHP Eric Hurley tonight. Not sure why. Should know that a bit later.

Feldman is 3-3 with a 4.85 ERA in 14 starts. He was supposed to return to the lineup today as a member of the bullpen, but instead gets back on the hill as a starter. Feldman gave up eight runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings with five walks and two strikeouts in his last start, against the Angels.

How about a compound Fanshot with minors notes?

Hunter didn't have a pretty start this afternoon, allowing runs in 4 of his 5 innings.

Read Part 2 of Jason Cole's mailbag and feel better about Omar Poveda, who goes tonight, along with Carlos Pimentel.

No pitch count...maybe this entitles him to a proper rehab start up in Frisco?

Fredo, C1, Zach, and Schlact all going later tonight.

I'm at 28 words here, and the spacing trick doesn't work on the new LSB.
