Nix doesn't go to winter ball, angers the Rangers

Two years ago it was Kevin Mench. Last year it was Gerald Laird.

This year? Laynce Nix, apparently.

According to George King of the New York Post, the Marlins are asking for pitching prospects and Laynce Nix from the Rangers for Juan Pierre. And per King, Nix "annoyed Ranger brass by not playing winter ball after missing a good part of the season with an injury."

So, like Mench and Laird before him, I expect to see Nix's name popping up in trade rumors next season, while he spends a good chunk of time in AAA or on the bench.

I do have to say, though, that if Nix spends the year in AAA, that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. Nix was jumped up to the majors in 2003 after a decent, but not great, half-season at AA. He's gone backwards since coming up, with his OBP sinking to horrendous levels and his power not developing. A full year of playing everyday at AAA might be better for him at this point that splitting time in the majors and continuing to struggle.
