The "Gold Ball"...

How exciting, MLB...

With their new home run derby gimmick, they have come up with the "gold ball"...

After a batter has 9 outs, the pitcher throws a "gold ball", a half-white/half-gold ball.

Except the "gold ball" doesn't actually count any more than a regular one. Or have any meaning.

It is irrelevant to the competition, except for the fact that the announcers can say that the batter is swinging at the "gold ball".

Geez...to borrow a line from Todd Hockney, does MLB's marketing department have a team of monkeys working around the clock on these ideas?
