The Rangers have optioned C.J. Wilson to the minors, and have recalled Marshall McDougall.
The Wilson move wasn't unexpected, and the bigger question is whether he'll be back in the majors this season. As has been mentioned before, this burns his first option, since Wilson wasn't on the 40 man roster to start the season.
McDougall, meanwhile, will probably cool his heels at the end of the bench, much like he did when he was called up previously. I'll be surprised if he gets more than 3 ABs before he's sent back down.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox have designated Jay Payton for assignment. This is worth noting mainly because the Rangers have lacked a righthanded compliment for David Dellucci, and Payton is a good defensive corner outfielder who can man center field fairly decently, as well. He's sort of a better version of Gary Matthews, Jr., and would be a better fit for the Chad Allen role of bench bat/defensive replacement than...well, than Chad Allen would be.
I'm not sure what Boston is going to do with Payton -- if they are going to deal him, or try to slide him through waivers -- but Payton is an interesting player, someone I think the Rangers should take a look at adding, particularly if they are ready to cut bait with Hidalgo.
