The Yankees have picked up LSB favorite Matt Lawton from the Cubs, in exchange for 21 year old pitcher Justin Berg, who had been pitching in the NY-Penn League.
Very nice pickup for the Yanks, without seeming to have given up much...BA's write-up of the deal doesn't say much about Berg, and I haven't heard of him up to now, but it doesn't appear he's a big-time prospect.
Lawton, meanwhile, gives the Yanks something they've badly needed...a quality OBP guy to plug into the #2 spot in the lineup. The Yanks have a team .298 OBP in the #2 hole, with Robinson Cano and Tony Womack getting most of those ABs.
Of course, Matsui is hitting 2nd today, with Lawton hitting 8th, so who knows...maybe they'll stick with that alignment...
