Bad news, folks...
Contrary to my earlier comment, the Rangers pick #16 overall this year, which means that if they sign a Type A free agent, they lose their first round pick. The tiebreaker in the case of a tie is previous year's record, which meant that Cincy got #15.
That sucks. Fortunately, there should be some compensatory picks for some departing free agents -- if Houston picks Carlos Lee, the Rangers would get the #17 overall selection, plus a sandwich pick, and Vicente Padilla, GMJ, Mark DeRosa, and Rod Barajas will all likely spawn compensatory picks if they are offered arbitration and sign elsewhere.
But giving up a first rounder, rather than a second rounder, if the Rangers sign someone makes me unhappy.
