Carlos Pena released

The Detroit Tigers have released Carlos Pena.

This seems to be a money-saving move, as much as anything else, since Pena was scheduled to make almost $3 million this year, and the Tigers will only have to pay a fraction of that by releasing him now. And this opens up first base for Chris Shelton full-time.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Atlanta or San Francisco pick him up. He's not a bad player, having posted EQAs in the .280s the last couple of years, although there are some questions about how good his defense at first really is, despite his reputation for being a great defensive player.
