September callups

Rosters expand on September 1, and there's discussion underway about who will be brought up to the majors then...

T.R. Sullivan says only Scott Feldman and Nick Masset are guaranteed to be called up. Sullivan suggests that John Rheinecker may be called up and used out of the pen as a situational lefty, and that Jason Botts, Joaquin Arias, Freddy Guzman and Drew Meyer are also being discussed, along with a third catcher, either Miguel Ojeda or Jamie Burke.

Evan Grant says Feldman, Masset and Ojeda are "almost certain" to get called up, with Rheinecker, John Koronka, and Kam Loe as possibilities, as well.

He also has this on Arias:

The most intriguing decision may be whether to bring up shortstop Joaquin Arias. Arias, acquired from the Yankees in the Alex Rodriguez deal, turns 22 on Sept. 21. He was .260 with four homers and 24 stolen bases at Triple-A Oklahoma entering Saturday.

Kat O'Brien also calls Arias a "strong possibility" for a callup.

I don't understand why Arias would even be considered. He's hitting .260/.291/.353 at AAA this year. He hasn't earned a promotion. I don't understand why he'd even be in the running. The thought that Arias is going to be a quality major league shortstop -- something the organization has been pushing since the day Arias arrived from New York -- seems to be little more than wishcasting.

Grant also says that Botts could be considered, if he shows he's healthy in his rehab stint in Arizona. I'd like to see Botts get regular DH ABs as soon as possible, since it seems like he's likely to be the Ranger DH in 2007.

Sullivan says that Guzman seems "less of a possibility" to be called up, because of Eric Young being up. I'm not sure what the story is with Guzman, but it seems like the organization -- or at least Buck, who has refused to play him when he's been up -- have decided he's not much of an option in the outfield.

O'Brien and Sullivan both suggest that Kam Loe is most likely going to be shut down for the season, rather than recalled.

And John Danks and Thomas Diamond, by all indications, will not be called up.
