The Brewers signed David Riske to a 3 year deal, worth $13 million minimum, possibly $20 million with incentives, and with a 4th year option.
And that triggered a move that had looked imminent all offseason...namely, the Brewers designating Laynce Nix for assignment.
Nix is 27, and I think folks here probably know his story, rushed to the majors in 2003, stricken with injury after injury, unable to make contact enough in the big leagues to be a decent hitter. He had an 868 OPS for the Brewers' AAA affiliate last year, and was hitless in 12 plate appearances in 2007.
He's out of options, and the Brewers have other, better options in the outfield, so it seemed inevitable Nix would be dropped from the 40 man roster at some point this offseason.
Now, here's the question...if you are the Rangers, and you've got a paucity of quality outfielders, do you put in a waiver claim on Nix?
Is it worth a spot on the 40 man to bring him in and give him a shot? If your outfield is Byrd, Murphy, and Cruz anyway, then what would it hurt?
