More Michael Young contract news, as Jon Heyman reports that the Rangers and Michael Young are "expected to settle on one of two deals, one for $80 million over five years, or the other for $90 million over six years."

Again, all indications are that a deal is going to get done, it is just a matter of how soon and how much.

I'm not going to re-hash all my thoughts on a Young extension -- you can read those here -- but a couple of other things I want to throw out there...

First, it will be interesting to see what the real present value of the contract is. Deferred money is one of the issues they are supposedly working on, and Tom Hicks in the past has shown a willingness to structure deals where the deferred money makes the deal's true value less than the "announced" value -- most recently with Kevin Millwood, whose 5 year, $60 million deal was really more like a 4 year, $42 million deal with a $12 million vesting option.

Second, while $15 million per year is too much for Young's age 32-36 seasons, the Ranger payroll when Young is in his mid-30s is likely to be in the $125 million range. I'd be surprised if the Rangers weren't paying at least $100 million per year for players other than Michael Young in, say, 2011.

Dave Sessions has some blog notes at the S-T, saying that Nelson Cruz has been showing power in the b.p. sessions, and that Jamey Wright is impressing the coaching staff so far. He also quotes Jon Daniels as saying that the first couple of weeks of camp have been "kind of uninteresting," in that everyone has shown up in shape and performing like they were supposed to perform.

Jan Hubbard lays out the pitchers for the first four days of games, and also asks three young Rangers who their top 5 guitarists are...

Evan Grant writes on the Rangers pitching depth, and the likelihood that they will be trading away a pitcher or two at the end of spring training, rather than trying to acquire pitching.

Of course, this will inevitably result in the incessant "why are the Rangers trading away PITCHIGN!L>W$TWOQWO#!!!:E :Q AGGGGHGHGHHGHGH!!!!" rants from the peanut gallery, so be prepared for that...

Grant also writes about Mark Teixeira making some adjustments to try to get off to a better start this season...

Sessions has a piece on the Cat's return to Texas, including quotes from Michael Young about how impressed Young was with the way Cat handled himself when he was going after the batting title in 2001.

And T.R. Sullivan blogs on GMJ being sucked into the steroid controversy...
