Mediocre pitchers getting paid

The Tigers gave Nate Robertson a 3 year, $21 million contract today.

Robertson made $3.6 million last year, and this buys out two arbitration years and a free agency year.

My thoughts on Robertson prior to 2007 can be found here, and his 2007 season didn't change anything for me...his peripherals were the same as always, and he went back to being the mediocrity he was before his fluky 2006 season.

He's a sub-par starting pitcher who has benefitted from a quality defense behind him, and signing him to a multi-year deal just doesn't make a ton of sense to me.

Between Robertson and Dontrelle Willis, the Tiggers now have a lot of money wrapped up in mediocre lefty pitchers with shaky peripherals who need a strong defense behind them to succeed...
