Per Ken Rosenthal, the Detroit Tigers are reportedly close to finalizing a 4 year, $50 million contract with free agent catcher Victor Martinez.
Martinez is a player who was supposedly high on the Rangers wish list, although given Martinez's age -- he turns 32 in December -- and his defensive shortcomings, there is some question about how long he can stay behind the plate, which means that most teams were looking at Martinez on a two or three year deal.
If the Rangers miss out on Martinez, their options on the free agent market at catcher are pretty slim, with former Rangers Gerald Laird and Rod Barajas among the best available players.
