The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly close to re-signing free agent closer Ryan Madson to a 4 year, $44 million deal.
Before 2011, Madson was primarily a setup man for the Phillies, and there were those who followed the Phillies who suggested that that was as far as he should rise, as he supposedly lacked a "closer's mentality."
But Madson had a successful 2011 season in the closer role for Philadelphia, and he seems to have alleviated concerns that he couldn't handle the closer's job.
4 years, $44 million is too much money for a reliever, but Madson is good, he's been with the Phillies for almost a decade, and Philadelphia clearly feels more comfortable overpaying to keep him around than getting involved in a bidding war for Heath Bell or Jonathan Papelbon.
