Rangers re-sign Fabio Castillo

New, comments

Three days ago, the Rangers non-tendered Fabio Castillo, a 22 year old righthanded pitcher who was added to the 40 man roster last offseason. I suspected at the time that this was a procedural move the Rangers were making in order to get him off the 40 man roster without having to run him through waivers (and run the risk of him being claimed), with the understanding that Castillo would then sign a minor-league deal with the Rangers.

Well, today the Rangers announced they have re-signed Castillo to a minor league deal with a spring training invite.

Jason Cole noted on Twitter that Castillo was A.J. Preller's first major signing out of Latin America -- he was inked in the summer of 2005 out of the Dominican Republic for a signing bonus of $250,000. Castillo is big and throws hard, but has not shown consistent results yet. Nevertheless, he still profiles as someone who could end up contributing out of a major league bullpen at some point, and keeping him in the organization is a good thing.
