With their third round pick in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, #113 overall, the Texas Rangers have selected Kyle Castro, a righthanded pitcher from Pleasant Grove High School in California.
Castro is 6 foot 4 inches tall, 190 pounds, and turns 18 in August, 2011.
He was not ranked among Baseball America's top 200 prospects.
BA did list Castro as the #22 ranked prospect in Northern California this year.
John Manuel of BA describes him as a "football athlete" who tops out at 92 mph right now.
T.R. Sullivan notes that Castro played defensive back for his high school football team, and had a 3.54 ERA in high school this past season.
This continues the trend of this draft, and the Rangers' preference in pitchers...athleticism, projectability, upside. Castro looks like another one of these guys who can flame out in the complex leagues, or who could develop into something significant down the road.
