According to Jon Heyman, Prince Fielder has agreed to a 9 year deal with the Detroit Tigers worth $214 million.
This is pretty much out of nowhere...until Victor Martinez's injury, there was almost no talk about the Tigers being in on Fielder, and even afterwards, the thought was that they might look at him as a short-term option.
However, Tigers owner Mike Ilitch has paid big for Boras clients with questionable markets in the past (see, e.g., Magglio Ordonez and Pudge Rodriguez), and it looks like, once again, Scott Boras was right and made his client a whole lot of money.
The Rangers, of course, were supposedly interested in Fielder, but only on a shorter-term deal that would involve some "creativity" on the part of Fielder. I would wager that something along the lines of 6 years, $135 million would have been the very most the Rangers would have offered, and it wouldn't surprise me if they weren't even willing to go that high.
