This is on the heels of the news that the Rangers have acquired catcher Geovany Soto (and cash) from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for AA righthanded pitcher Jacob Brigham.
Torrealba was signed to a two year contract after the 2010 season, and has shared catching duties with Mike Napoli for the past year and a half. However, he has struggled with the bat this season, and has come under criticism this year for not providing the quality of defense that would be expected from a glove-first catcher.
If Torrealba has been designated for assignment, the Rangers would have 10 days to waive, trade or release him. T.R. Sullivan says that Torrealba could be part of another deal in the next 24 hours, although the July 31 trade deadline is less meaningful for Torrealba than for some other players, as he would likely clear waivers after July 31, allowing the Rangers to deal him in August.
