Per Gerry Fraley, the Rangers will purchase the contract of Jurickson Profar tomorrow, September 1st, when rosters expand.
The Rangers have been playing without a utility infielder for almost a month, and the addition of Profar will give the Rangers a true backup shortstop.
Profar, signed out of Venezuela in 2009 and widely considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball, has spent the entire 2012 season at AA Frisco, where he has posted a .281/.368/.452 line while stealing 16 bases in 20 attempts.
I do not expect Profar to get significant playing time over the remainder of the season...the Rangers are likely to use Michael Young at second base, should Ian Kinsler get a day off, which means Profar will likely pick up only a couple of starts between now and when the Rangers clinch, and otherwise will likely be relegated to late inning duty in blowouts.
While Profar is not on the 25 man roster as of today, because he was in the organization as of August 31, and because the Rangers have players who will be on the disabled list at season's end, Profar will be eligible to be placed on the Rangers' post-season roster.
