The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed lefthanded reliever Tommy Hottovy on waivers.

Hottovy was designated for assignment to make room on the 40 man roster for newly signed designated hitter Lance Berkman. The Rangers had acquired Hottovy from Kansas City in November, 2012, for a player to be named player or cash.

I expect Hottovy to be waived by the Blue Jays in the near future. Toronto has spent much of this offseason churning the 40 man roster, claiming players who they then waived soon thereafter, apparently seeking to then outright the player and keep them in the organization. The Blue Jays have claimed the following players on waivers since October 1, 2012:

Scott Cousins (who was designated for assignment two weeks later)

Cory Wade (who was designated for assignment 6 weeks later)

Tyson Brummett (who was designated for assignment 6 days later and then outrighted)

Bobby Wilson (who was non-tendered five weeks later)

David Herndon (who was designated for assignment 8 days later)

Scott Maine (who was designated for assignment one week later)

Eli Whiteside (who was waived that same day)

Mickey Storey (who was outrighted two days later)

Russ Canzler (who was claimed by Toronto from Cleveland on 12/21, waived by Toronto, claimed by Cleveland from Toronto on 1/2, and then claimed by New York on 1/4)

Chad Beck (who they had DFA'd 10 weeks earlier)

So expect Hottovy to be waived shortly by Toronto, if hasn't been waived by them already, immediately upon them claiming him.
