The Rangers have announced that catcher Luis Martinez has been claimed on waivers by the Baltimore Orioles, and catcher Eli Whiteside has cleared waivers and been outrighted to AAA Round Rock.
Martinez was designated for assignment to make room on the 40 man roster for newly signed catcher A.J. Pierzynski. Whiteside was designated for assignment to make room on the 40 man roster for newly signed reliever Jason Frasor.
Martinez was acquired by the Rangers in December, 2011, in exchange for Ryan Kelly. He was the team's third catcher in 2012, and appeared in 10 games, getting 19 plate appearances. He will join the gaggle of former Rangers on the Orioles' 40 man roster.
Whiteside was claimed off of waivers by the Rangers from the Toronto Blue Jays in December, 2012. This was the fourth time he had been designated for assignment this offseason, having previously been DFA'd by the Giants (with whom he spent the 2012 season), the Yankees (who claimed him on waivers from the Giants), and the Blue Jays (who claimed him on waivers from the Yankees).
